And we’re BACK!!

Rock gardens, Alpines and Crevice gardens with Gary Edwards

Do you have a sunny front yard location needing some plant variety, a driveway edge with good drainage, or a slope where grass struggles to grow? Would you like a raised bed built specifically for alpine plants? Gary will talk about plant selection, growing conditions and a few popular and easy to grow choices of alpine plants for these areas. Gary is the owner of Meadow view Nursery and has recently set up a new gardening YouTube channel to enable him to pass on his horticultural knowledge to others. The videos show the gardens along with tips and advice on a wide range of subjects.

September 8th Flower Show

There are 16 classes for entries in this month’s flower show. Why not take a wander through your gardens and see what you might have. The listings are on page 16 in your yearbook. There are lots to choose from.

It’s OK to show off all the hard work that you’ve done in your gardens!
Entries can be dropped off at the Marshland Centre between 5:45- 6:30 pm. Judging starts at 6:30 sharp.

SECTION A - CLASS
1. *Dahlia – 1 bloom
2. Chrysanthemum – 1 spray
3. Sedum – 3 stems
4. Marigolds or Calendula – 3 stems
5. Aster – 1 stem
6. Hydrangea - 1 stem
7. Zinnias – 1 stem
8. Rose – 1 bloom or stem
9. Miniature Rose – 1 bloom or spray
10. Perennial not mentioned above – named, 1 stem
11. Annual not mentioned above – named, 1 stem
12. Flowering Shrub or Vine – not mentioned above, 1 stem, max 60 cm
13. Fruiting branch – shrub or vine, 1 stem, max 60 cm
14. Ornamental grasses – 5 stems, one or more cultivars
15. Any vegetable or fruit – max. 5 specimens displayed on a plate, max. 20 cm
SECTION B - DECORATIVE
16. “Harvest Time” a design using a vegetable as a container.
*Two entries of different cultivars per member allowed in these classes.

Happy day gardeners!

We don’t have any activities planned until our next meeting in September, but it’s a great time to grab a few friends and go and check out some gardens or garden businesses together.

Griffins Greenhouses is celebrating 50 years in business and next weekend, July 24-26th have some special activities planned. You’ll want to check that out.

The gardens at Anna’s perennials are amazing this time of year. Just wear some sunscreen and bring some water. (Cash or etransfer only)

Gardens plus is almost closed for the season…so don’t wait!

If you’d like to stay cool, then pop by The Avant-Garden shop in downtown Peterborough. The A/C is on! Lots of beautiful new Canadian made garden items!

Burleys has some beautiful plants and gardens for you to wander just on the edge of Peterborough.

Blossom hill nursery is open limited hours. Check their page for updates each week.

Maybe you just need a few new house plants? Then pop by Tiny Greens downtown.

June 9th: Gardening for Climate Change – James Byrne

As many gardeners and backyard wildlife enthusiasts across the country have noticed, climate change is already having a significant impact on our backyard habitats. James will discuss the effect of climate change on our gardens —from watering restrictions and damaging storms, to the expansion of unruly weeds and garden pests. Drawing on regenerative agricultural practices, he’ll provide recommendations for climate-proofing our home gardens.

Thank you to everyone who came out early Saturday morning to buy plants at our annual Plant Sale. We’re sorry that we were sold out by 10 am!

Thank you to our members that donated plants, helped pot up native shrubs and plants, and sold plants at the sale. We have the best volunteers!

Tomorrow Saturday May 16th looks to finally be a seasonally warm day so come out to the Lakefield Horticultural Society Plant Sale at the Cenotaph Park! We’ll have lots of perennials including natives, 3 species of native shrubs (Serviceberry, Ninebark, and Alternate-leaved Dogwood), and many annuals. Perennials and shrubs have been root washed and potted in sterile soil and annuals have been grown in sterile soil. Sale starts at 8 am and goes to sellout. Thanks to our fabulous volunteers for donating plants, root washing, potting up or growing annuals so that we can offer such a great selection of plants!

Plant sale will be held Saturday May 16th starting at 8:00am. No early birds please!

The sale will run until 11:30 or when we’re sold out!

Lots of perennials, some shrubs and annuals as well!

In front of the Cenotaph in Lakefield. If you’ve never been you can’t miss it as you drive into the village over the bridge. Come early so you won’t be disappointed!
