Last evening I was in a tutoring session with a grade nine student and we were reading a Virtues Project Card. This one was looking at Self Discipline. I chose this card because I thought that my student would really benefit from it. As we were reading the card I realized that I was terrible at practicing Self Discipline. As a teacher I am always harping on my students to practice self discipline and here I am not practicing what I was preaching! I felt like such a hypocrite!!! I guess I need to go back to the drawing board and focus on getting better at practicing self discipline.

I came across this quote the other day and my mind keeps coming back to it. It reminded me of my grandson who is six and loves building planes, car/trucks and flying his drone. Whenever a build doesn’t work out the way he wants it to he gets very frustrated, angry, and has a meltdown. He says that he’s terrible at everything, and no one should love him because he’s a failure!!
When did failure become such a negative, sad, paralyzing, life destroying event? Yes, failing doesn’t feel very good. It hurts, it’s time consuming, and it seems like it always happens at the worst times. WHY IS FAILURE ALWAYS A NEGATIVE THING?? When I look back at my life and remember the times that I have failed, (I have many of these kinds of memories), I see a time in my life that I was forced to learn. Learning is NOT a negative, it’s a huge positive!!
I keep encouraging my grandson to keep trying, never give up. Everyone experiences failure, most people interpret it as a bad thing. Try something new, treat failure as a learning experience, learn the lessons that your failure has taught you, and try again. Never lose the thirst for knowledge and the enthusiasm for life. Just think how good it will feel when you do finally succeed!

I have been reading many post of parents talking about their kids who have ADHD. Many of these posts focus on the negative aspects of living with ADHD. I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and it has been hard to learn what I need to do to be successful. I have chosen to focus on the strengths that ADHD adds to my life. Lots of energy, ideas, intuition, enthusiasm, humour, and a sense of adventure. I chose to focus on the positives that life provides. This is a conscious decision. There is so much negative in our world and I find it weighs me down. Focus on the positive and you will find the positive.
