What can inattentive ADHD feel like from the child’s point of view?

It is very easy to mistake difficulties with attention, organisation and task initiation for a lack of effort.

“They were listening a minute ago.”
“They know what they need to do.”
“They just need to concentrate.”
“They could do it if they tried.”

But inattentive ADHD is not about a child simply choosing not to pay attention.

A child may genuinely want to listen, remember the instruction, start the task and finish it — while finding that their attention has already drifted, the instruction has disappeared or they cannot work out where to begin.

And constantly being told to try harder can become exhausting when they already feel as though they are trying incredibly hard.

Support is not about lowering expectations. It is about making those expectations more accessible: breaking tasks down, reducing unnecessary overload, using clear instructions, visual prompts, reminders and giving the child time to process.

Because sometimes the child who appears not to be trying is actually working far harder than we realise.

As always, every child is different. Not every child with inattentive ADHD will experience all of these things.

Save this post if it might help someone understand the child behind the behaviour.
