🌿 Land, Culture, Connection, Healing 🌿
On June 3rd, students from Lac La Biche Outreach School and Journeys Learning Academy - NLPS AB spent the day at Hideaway Adventure Grounds on Kikino Métis Settlement — and what an unforgettable day it was!🙌🏽🙌🏽
Set on 160 acres of pristine wilderness, our students experienced a powerful, land-based retreat rooted in Métis culture, healing, and resilience.
Here’s what students experienced throughout this Community Helpers initiative 👇🏽
🔥 Prepared bannock over an open fire
🧵 Crafted traditional leather medicine pouches
🪶 Listened to Métis stories passed down through generations
🌱 Explored cultural teachings, survival skills, and holistic wellness practices
🧍🏽♂️ Found connection with themselves, each other, and the land
This retreat brought to life so many of the goals we hold close at Outreach:
✔️ Building resilience and healthy coping skills
✔️ Deepening cultural connection and belonging
✔️ Promoting responsibility, purpose, and hope
✔️ Creating space for healing and community
A heartfelt thank-you to Hideaway Adventure Grounds and storyteller John Ritchie for their hospitality, wisdom, and care. And to the Community Helpers Program for making this incredible opportunity possible❤️
We’re so proud of our students for showing up with openness and courage — and for carrying these lessons forward in their lives.

We were proud to take five of our students on a field trip—this time, to the Portage College Trades Open House!
It was a hands-on day of exploration, inspiration, and opportunity. One student even took the leap and registered for a program on the spot, thanks to waived registration fees today!🙌🏽🙌🏽
We love seeing our students get curious, take initiative, and start shaping their futures. 🔧⚙️👷♀️👨🏭

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 🥰
This year’s theme 👉🏽”Unmasking Mental Health”was all about breaking down stigma and creating space for honest conversations around well-being 🎭
From BBQs and self-care sessions (thanks to Successful Families Successful Kids) to interactive presentations and creative expression activities, students came together in a supportive, inclusive environment to learn, reflect, and connect.🫶🏽
Events took place throughout the week at Lac La Biche, Journeys Learning Academy, and Crossroads Outreach School—building community, encouraging self-awareness, and making mental health real and relatable. ❤️
Huge thank you to Lac La Biche FCSS, Lac La Biche Tourism/County, and Alberta Fish and Wildlife for helping us fill student self-care packages with thoughtful support!
