Hello students and parents.

Many of you probably have already heard about AI or ChatGPT, and maybe have already seen these tools in use. For those of you that haven't heard of AI yet here is a short definition.

According to IBM, AI (artificial intelligence) “...leverages computers and machines to mimic the problem-solving and decision-making capabilities of the human mind.” Hewlett Packard says that AI “... broadly refers to any human-like behaviour displayed by a machine or system. In AI’s most basic form, computers are programmed to “mimic” human behaviour using extensive data from past examples of similar behaviour.”

As AI becomes more common it is being used in more and more locations, including educational settings. As a staff we are constantly looking for new and innovative ways we can positively incorporate these new technologies into our online classrooms.

Every new innovation can be disruptive. AI is a great example. AI can be used positively, but it can also undermine learning opportunities. As a staff we do not encourage students to use AI programs like ChatGPT to complete work. If you are unsure about AI and its use please reach out to your teacher for clarification.

As said before, this is new ground for everyone. AI is new and in the coming months there will be many lessons about these tools that we will be learning together. Please reach out to your instructor with any questions or concerns.
