The Two Greatest Commandments -by Laoshi Mike
Did you know that Jesus gave us a simple way to understand what matters most?
One day, a teacher of the law came to Jesus and asked Him an important question:
“Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
Jesus answered:
“The most important one, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”
— Mark 12:29–31
Jesus summarized all the commandments into two great principles:
Love God with all your heart.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
Sometimes life gets complicated, we have decisions to make, problems to solve, and situations where we aren’t sure what the right thing to do is.
When that happens, we can come back to these two questions:
Am I loving God with all my heart?
Am I loving my neighbor as myself?
If we are genuinely trying to live by those two commandments, we are heading in the right direction.
I find this especially important in Kung Fu for Christ. Sometimes I can become so focused on the Kung Fu—the techniques, the training, getting better, or teaching others—that I can lose sight of the most important part.
We don’t train Kung Fu for Christ simply to become better at Kung Fu. We train so that we can better love and serve God and our neighbors.
Our neighbors include instructors, students, parents and every person who walks through the doors is someone we have an opportunity to treat with patience, kindness, respect, and love.
As we go into the world this week, we will face all kinds of people and situations. When you’re unsure what to do, remember the two greatest commandments:
Love God with all your heart.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
If we can get those two things right, we are putting first what Jesus said matters most.
