🧡 Every Child Matters 🧡

At SMS, we believe education is about creating a community where every child feels seen, valued, and respected. Today, our students and educators wear orange as we honour Indigenous children and Survivors of residential schools and reflect on the importance of truth and reconciliation.

Through our Montessori approach, we encourage children to ask questions, learn from different perspectives, and develop empathy and respect for others. Today is an opportunity to learn together, reflect together, and continue building a more inclusive community.

🌎✨ The First Great Story!

In Montessori, The First Great Story invites children to explore the origins of the universe and begin asking big questions about the world around them. Our Lower Elementary students experienced this lesson through storytelling, experiments, and meaningful exploration.

Students investigated matter, energy, solids, liquids and gases, space, Earth, and volcanoes, building their understanding through observation and discovery. 🌌🌋

To bring their learning into their own hands, students also created and painted their own volcanoes, turning a big scientific idea into a hands-on Montessori experience. 🎨

It’s this combination of wonder, independence, imagination, and hands-on learning that makes Montessori science so meaningful. ✨

🍽️ Learning, cooking, and giving back to our community!

Our Middle Years students look forward to preparing a community meal each week, working together from start to finish. From choosing a meal and shopping for ingredients to cooking and serving, students take an active role in creating something they can share with their wider SMS community.

This year, Ms. Dunker is leading our Community Meal program, bringing her culinary experience alongside Ms. Hao. Last week, students put their skills to work creating a delicious gourmet macaroni and cheese paired with seasoned broccoli. 🧀🥦

Today, they’re back in the kitchen making chicken tenders and Caesar salad! 🍗🥗

Through this hands-on experience, students are developing practical life skills while building teamwork, responsibility, and a strong sense of community. ❤️

Our Terry Fox Run is coming up! 🏃‍♀️💛

On Friday, October 2, our SMS community will come together to honour Terry Fox and his incredible legacy by participating in our annual Terry Fox Run.

This year, our goal is to raise $7,000 to support cancer research. We are so proud of our students for coming together to make a difference and carry Terry’s message of hope and determination forward. 🌟

🐴✨ Project Centaur is back!

We’re thrilled to kick off another year of our one-of-a-kind equine learning initiative, led by our Art & Drama specialist, Dr. Agnew!

Our Grade 8 students dive into the world of horses—exploring animal husbandry, equine therapy, rural business, and history. They then step up as mentors to our Grade 3 riders, sharing their knowledge and guiding younger students through hands-on farm experiences.

Rooted in Dr. Montessori’s vision of learning through nature and real-world connection, Project Centaur helps students build leadership, compassion, independence, and practical life skills. 🌿

Here’s to another year of discovery, mentorship, and the magic of the horse-human connection! 🐴💚
