A backboard is used by first responders to help move and transport patients who may have a serious injury. While it’s commonly associated with spinal injuries, today it’s most often used as a patient movement device, allowing rescuers to safely lift and carry someone when needed.

💡 Fun fact: Although they’re often called “spinal boards,” modern first aid and EMS practice uses backboards more selectively than in the past, with spinal motion restriction based on the patient’s condition rather than placing everyone on a board.
