Across Ontario, many experienced educators are spending years moving between temporary teaching assignments with no clear pathway to permanent employment.

This ongoing instability is taking a real toll, not only on educators and their families, but also on students and school communities who benefit from continuity and long-term relationships.

Since changes to provincial hiring policy several years ago, experience and years of service are no longer consistently recognized in hiring processes. While this shift was framed as increasing flexibility, the result has been less transparency, less consistency, and growing frustration across the profession.

This is not a local school or board issue. It is a provincial policy issue that directly impacts teacher retention, recruitment, and stability in classrooms. Without a fair and transparent pathway to permanent work, it will be increasingly difficult to attract and retain educators in public education.

We believe that stable, supported educators lead to stronger learning environments for students. Addressing hiring and permanence is essential to the long-term health of Ontario’s public education system.
