Calling all singers, and all folks who use their voice in a performance setting!

Please join us for this exciting workshop on using Neuro Athletics to calm the nerves and improve vocal stamina!

The workshop leader is Amie Debrone, voice teacher, singer, actor, and the first person in Canada to be certified by The Singing Athlete, which uses neuroscience to create lasting change for singers and actors of all levels and ages.

This is an outreach event hosted by the Grand Philharmonic Choir. Join us on Friday Nov. 7 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo. It's free for students and $10 for others.

This is an important read. There are lots of benefits to music lessons… but they aren’t always the ones you think.

“You have to practice or it’s a waste of my time and your money”.

“If you want to improve you have to put in the work”.

“I only take on students who commit to playing every day.”

“I can tell you haven’t been practicing, it shows in your playing.”

Nope. Nope. Nope.

Oh! How heart breaking to think that in the hearts of most instrument teachers of the past, and some (many?) still today, improving is the ultimate goal of instrument lessons.

This is the kind of narrative that leads music students to give up playing their flute, after 5 years of lessons, because they’re no longer ‘getting better’. So what’s the point?

It prevents parents from finding piano lessons for their child because they know, hands down, they won’t put in the practice. So what’s the point?

Representative of a system that pedestals children who do music exams because their value as a musician can be documented, over the children who play by ear, or by imagination.

Dare I say it, the ones who “play instruments but aren’t real musicians”.

Can. We. Settle. Down. Please.

Music is an experience.

That’s it!

A healthy, brainy, nervous systemy, emotional experience.

*It does not require commodification to be valuable.*

*Every single moment we experience music we are having a significant moment.*

Every time we experience music by hearing it, thinking about it or even making it, more of our brain becomes simultaneously active, than when we experience any other thing.

The moment of music experiencing IS the outcome.

The getting better is a by product.

And it’s ok to desire to master your skill. It’s a beautiful, loving thing to desire to master your skill.

But if we could magically put instrument playing on a set of justice scales, with the ‘aiming to improve student’ on one side and the ‘playing for the fun of it human’ on the other side, one would sink and one would fly.

And we all know which is which.

We inherently know. Such is the depth of the deep conditioning that tells us instrument lessons have a purpose.

And for what? For external validation.

Honestly. It’s a really, truly sad thing that we have done to music. Tried to trap her in a box of This Is How We Do It.

She is a mist, an air, a spiritual being. The box can’t trap her. Music is everywhere, all around us, but we keep looking for her in the box. And when we hear her in there we celebrate her! Completely oblivious to the enormity of the symphony that plays all around us, all the time. We celebrate the boxed bit.

We pedestal it for following the rules and improving in technique.

Yet the musical mist smiles because she isn’t trapped at all. She’s just waiting for us all to fu***ng calm down. And just BE musical.

Without this incessant need to prove our value.

She is a goddess. She is a teacher. She is an elder.

May music melt the strict hearts of the strict teachers and let us just play the chords without practicing the scales.

Nov 16 & 17 - NATS Ontario Vocal Showcase at Laurier!

Registration is now open for the Live & Virtual Vocal Showcases! Registration for both Live and Virtual Showcases is now open! The deadline for LIVE registration is Monday, October 28, 2024, including backtrack links for Popular Voice entries. Visit www.auditionware.com to register. The Live Showcase will be held at Wilfrid Laurier University in Kitchener-Waterloo on the weekend of November 16-17, 2024, with an exciting new “day-by-age” format offering all three genres each day (Classical, Musical Theatre and Popular Voice)! Junior Day will be held on Saturday, November 16 for singers 18 years and younger, and Senior Day will be held on November 17 for University students and Adults. This new format allows singers to enter more than one category and to try different styles all within one day. A Winner’s Concert will be held at the conclusion of each day. The deadline for VIRTUAL Vocal Showcase registration (including video links) is Monday, November 4, 2024. Adjudicators for the Virtual Showcase will receive video links by November 8 and have until November 25 to return their comment sheets and rankings. The Virtual Winner’s Concert will be shared on YouTube on Sunday, December 1, 2024.

These four goofs had to be bullied into letting me get a photo of them together at the cast party tonight, because they spent the last two weeks having so much fun (and working so hard) with their colleagues in the production of Les Mis that they didn’t stop for a photo!! It was a stunning production, .salewski, brava! I’m so glad my students got to work under your leadership, I know they had a blast while growing by leaps and bounds.
