This weekend we put Sensei Adam Arbiter through some pretty serious challenges as he prepares for WKC World Karate Championships.

Kata is about power and precision. Real power demands a push from somewhere deep inside—a place that can be difficult to find unless you’ve been there before. Kata training is largely about finding that place, returning to it often enough that it becomes familiar, and developing a connection to that powerful driving force.

That is spirit.

Precision comes from aligning the mechanics of the body so the ex*****on and release of that power is as efficient as possible. Ultimately, in karate we seek to transfer maximum energy at maximum velocity. Any breach in alignment, breakdown in structure, or lapse in technique means energy is lost.

That is body.

Then there is the mind: focus, concentration, analysis and the constant honing of technique. It requires an inward awareness—understanding what your body is doing, recognizing where power is being lost, and learning how to express that power more effectively.

Mind. Body. Spirit.

Those three elements work together in constant motion, each pushing the others toward growth—even when those improvements become so small they are almost impossible to see, but they are felt. The three "flames" driving each other into an eternal circle is the focal point of our logo for a reason.

Sometimes, though, unfamiliar training methods are exactly what we need. Put the body under a different kind of load, remove the comfort of familiar technique, and failure points become very real. You discover where your structure holds, where it breaks, how you respond when you’re exhausted, and whether you can still access that deeper drive when your body is telling you it has had enough.

We use a wide variety of practical tools and exercises in the dojo to develop those qualities.

But sometimes… we take it to the bush😈

Gotta love it when the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission includes a photo of a local KL’er in their World Championships promotion!

That’s our own Payton Brown — one of the hardest-working and constantly evolving junior martial artists to come through our dojo.

From the first time she stepped onto the mat in competition, Payton showed the qualities of a champion in the making: determination, composure, coachability, and a willingness to keep putting in the work.

And at just 12 years old, she’s already become an inspiration to many and a well-known name on the national circuit — affectionately referred to as “Legit” and even “an icon” by some of the teenage elites she competes alongside. 😎

Those are pretty cool compliments to earn at 12.

Keep working. Keep learning. Keep setting those goals and chasing them, Payton. We’re proud of you!

Some of our junior members were tested this week for their next belt level. These smiles are well-earned and reflect the hard work, perseverance, and dedication they have shown on the mats.
Thank you to Sempai Sophia and Carter for their leadership and for helping guide our juniors toward success as part of their own promotions.
We would also like to give a special shout-out to our brand-new Sempais: Payton, Victoria, and Emmerson! This achievement reflects years of dedication, growth, and effort. You continue to make your mark on the provincial and national competition scene. Well done! You are already serving as mentors at such a young age.
Congratulations to everyone who stepped up and challenged themselves during this grading cycle. Keep working hard, supporting one another, and striving to be your best. You continue to make us proud at Bushi Martial Arts Academy.

Always a great time when World Champion Fighter Josh Carrière comes to town! Thank you Sir Josh for taking the time to come to Kirkland Lake. 🥋🔥 That’s a wrap! 🔥🥋

After 3 days of intense competition, Nationals has come to a close and everyone is back home safe.

The finals brought out the absolute best in the country. The pressure was high, the divisions were stacked, and every athlete stepped onto the floor with their A-game. Our team rose to that challenge and battled hard against Canada’s elite.

Final Day Results:

🥋 Sophia Lauzon — 6th overall in Girls 14–15 Traditional Weapons
🥋 Payton Brown — 8th overall in Girls 10–11 Hard Style Forms
🥋 Sensei Carla Vine — First Alternate in Veteran Women’s Traditional Weapons, and First Alternate in both 35+ and 42+ Veteran Women’s Point Fighting
🥉 Sensei Adam Arbiter — Made the National Team with a Bronze Medalist in 35+ Veteran Men’s Traditional Forms, and is the First Alternate in Men’s 18+ Classical Forms

We are incredibly proud of the effort, discipline, pride, and commitment shown by our competitors throughout this event. Representing Northern Ontario at the National Trials is no small task, and our athletes carried themselves with heart, resilience, and professionalism every step of the way.

Thank you to all of our members and families who continue to support our athletes and our dojo. Thank you as well to Master Christian Fortin and Sir Josh Carrière for their continued work and collaboration with our team.

And finally, thank you to WKC Canada for hosting such an elite-level event.
