Let's talk about performance anxiety!

Have you ever felt while playing by yourself, you play the best you've ever played? All until you sit down to play for someone, your teacher, or a live audience and crippling anxiety creeps in.

Often times students will opt out of performing and the performance anxiety will make them quit playing all together.

Overcoming performance anxiety isn't as simple as "pretending the audience is smiling" as some people say. Here are other suggestions and tricks we give our students to help overcome performance anxiety.

1. Controlled breathing.
2. Physically preparing your piece to the best you possibly can.
3. Don't focus on what could go wrong.
4. Avoiding thoughts that promote self doubt.
5. Knowing that making mistakes is OKAY!
6. Practicing performing. The more we perform the easier it does get.

It's natural to get nervous at any age and we are here to help you overcome that. 🎼

Here is Esther performing at our Spring Recital and doesn't she look super focused and calm? Well done Esther!👏

So impressed with all of our students at this years end of year recital. They worked so hard and it was another successful year. It was a beautiful day of music and as you can see on everyone's faces it was a a lot of fun too! 🎶 I know for all teachers, one of our favourite things is to witness all of our students hard work be presented/performed and to watch students overcome fears. As we gear up for September lessons, enjoy these beautiful photos as we look forward to another year of music!

What is parallel motion? 🎶

Parallel motion is when two or more notes are moving in the same direction on the piano with the same interval (distance between two notes).

What makes this challenging on piano for beginner and early learners is that you have to use different finger numbers between both hands. You are training your brain to do something different with each hand which takes practice!

Vienna has been working hard on parallel motion, great work Vienna 🎹

We hope everyone is having a wonderful long weekend!

We feel like a family at ESHML and with today being Family Day it has us reminiscing on past recitals and events.

Check out Harper playing Chinese Lanterns by Katherine Fisher.

Harper learned this song completely by rote learning!
We have been exploring learning the piano by rote, reading, and ear. All three of these methods are effective in learning any instrument.

Rote learning is learning music by recognizing musical patterns, or meaningful groups of notes.

Harper would watch Mrs. Jessika play small phrases and groupings of the song and then would repeat after her. She then was tasked to go home over a few weeks to try and remember what she had worked on in her lesson to the best of knowledge.

Great work Harper! 🎹
