We would like to take the time to highlight a few Indigenous Dance traditions that take place within Indigenous communities across Canada.

Dance traditions are an integral part of many Indigenous cultures, and have been since time immemorial. Dance has many roles in many Indigenous cultures, including celebrations, spiritual connections, memorials, and more. Dance is often used to connect with and thank the Creator, and is used to maintain culture by passing stories, teachings, and traditions between generations.

As we honour National Indigenous History Month, join us in celebrating Indigenous contributions by learning about traditional Indigenous dances.

Dance Styles influenced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community (dancer emoji, disco ball, pride flag)

These diverse styles ranging from sharp poses to theatrical performances are pillars amongst the dance community, inspiring current and future dance styles. QDC values the contributions these styles have made to the dance community, while honouring historical efforts the 2SLGBTQIA+ community made to keep these styles alive.

Join us in celebrating dance forms shaped by q***r communities and their lasting impact they have amongst the dance community and challenging social norms.

The first day of June marks the start of National Indigenous History month. This month we honour the rich history, diverse cultures, and experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples in Canada.

At QDC we take this month to reflect on the long lasting impact Indigenous movement, rhythm, and storytelling has had on cultural expression and the art of dance. We recognize and appreciate the significance of Indigenous dance practices as forms of celebration, connection, and spirituality.

Queen’s University is situated on the traditional Anishinaabe (ah-nish-naw-be) and Haudenosaunee (hoodt-en-oh-show-nee) territories. We are grateful to live, learn, and dance on these lands which have been cared for by the Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.

QDC remains committed to fostering respect, learning, and appreciation for Indigenous cultures and perspectives within our community.
