Checkers, anyone? Perhaps a game of chess? How about the newly invented “checkerboard soccer”? Shall we play by the standard rules? Or play forest school styles? ♟️We’ve been gifted a stump with a checkerboard on it and the kids (and adults) have taken to it in such wonderful and unexpected ways! It has attracted the attention of all ages and all personalities. It has facilitated new friendships, stolen whole afternoons from the busiest of kids, and taught us lessons in creativity, communication, and collaboration. We can’t wait to see how it’ll be used next!

📚Book roundup! Here are some of the books that we have read in our Seedlings and Acorns & Oaks programs over the past few weeks of our Fall Session! You may notice some themes… seasons & weather, truth & reconciliation, bugs & seeds, and several silly stories!

As always, a BIG SHOUTOUT to our favourite bookstore Beggars Banquet Books for always helping us find the perfect books for every occasion, season, and group of kids! And to Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) and Gananoque Public Library for keeping our shelves well-stocked with seasonal and relevant books for free! (Having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card!)

🧡 There’s more to it than just wearing an orange shirt on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, but that’s a great place to start.

As a community, we continuously recommit to truth and reconciliation by:
- modelling reciprocity and how to be with nature in a good way;
- talking about kindnesses and unkindnesses, and the true history of the Land on which we play, learn & grow;
- reading and filling the yurt shelves with books by Indigenous authors;
- bringing Indigenous perspectives into our programs through resources like “Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults” (Robin Wall Kimmerer, Monique Gray Smith, and Nicole Neidhardt) and “Natural Curiosity” (Doug Anderson, Julie Comay, and Lorraine Chiarotto);
- reading and reflecting on “52 Ways to Reconcile” (David Robertson);
- working with local Indigenous community members and organizations;
- working through the Cycles of Indigenous Learning Courses and other Indigenous learning opportunities offered by The Outdoor Learning School & Store;
- and more.

We are learning, we are listening, we are trying to know better and to do better. Not just today, but every day.

🍏What a treat it is when the Acorns & Oaks make the long trek up to the Apple Tree! A special adventure, typically only planned once a session, timed in the spring for blossoms, and in the fall for apples! Those little legs work hard to get there and then so much fun is had exploring a new place, climbing, tucking away, catching blossoms or tasting tart fruit, a picnic lunch and many stories enjoyed in the grassy meadow or in the shade of the junipers or lilacs ✨ This fall, it was so deeply enjoyed that they’ve requested to go again real soon! How could we say no? ❤️

✨That feeling when you’re parked on a blanket in the woods with your TBR pile right beside you and the whole afternoon still ahead of you 📖

We always have a pile of books available – in the yurt, on the resource table, in the wagon, on a blanket, at the apple tree, at the rainbow tree, sometimes even at the parking lot! That way, when the mood strikes, anyone can grab a book to look at, to read, or to have read to them. Books on books on books! 📚 Check out to see some of our favourite circle time reads!

🤎On today’s menu… mudball soup? This was fished out of a cup of murky water and offered to me this morning and that spoon got awfully close to my mouth 😆 It’s always so fun to see which kids are drawn to the mud kitchen on any given day and what will inspire their cooking. I was also offered tea (floral notes in muddy water) and an omelette (a big rock egg just sitting in the middle of the pan) and told that the dessert was a surprise that would turn me into a unicorn! 🦄 What will they cook up next?!

Here are some of the books that we have read in our Seedlings and Acorns & Oaks programs over the first few weeks of our Fall Session!
