The Aging in Community Partnership co-led by Queen’s researchers Catherine Donnelly and Vincent DePaul (Rehabilitation Therapy) and Carri Hand (Western University) have been awarded $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to further expand the national network of Oasis Communities for Aging Well.

Oasis Communities are designed by older adults and operate within 'naturally occurring retirement communities' like apartment buildings, established neighborhoods and small communities across Canada. They help older adults connect with each other through activities and healthy living so they can stay well and age well at home as long as possible.

New research from Dr. Kerstin de Wit recently published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal shows that high levels of burnout are contributing to 1 in 10 emergency department physicians leaving the profession, with others reducing the number of shifts they work.

For millions of Canadians living with asthma or chronic lung disease, inhalers are a part of life. What many may not consider is the environmental footprint of these devices, specifically their carbon emissions which are surprisingly high.

New research from Anthony Train, Queen's Family Medicine, shows that prescriptions for the higher-emission devices in Ontario greatly outweigh those for lower-emission treatments.

"The findings suggest there is significant room for improvement in Canada," says Dr. Train. "Many of the countries we compare ourselves to have been more successful in reducing their reliance on metered-dose inhalers, showing that it is possible to shift toward lower-emission alternatives."

Dr. Mary Ann McColl's research identifies ten stories older adults tell again and again, and when we listen beyond the details we uncover the values and deeper meaning behind them. MD students Megan Lowe and Cheryl Xing are the duo behind this creative new initiative, partnering with to write and illustrate the children’s book, now available at Novel Idea in Kingston, bookstores in Toronto, online, and in local hospitals and schools.
