The School of Policy Studies has announced that the Queen’s International Institute on Social Policy, which has explored social policy issues facing Canada and other OECD countries for over 25 years, will be placed on hiatus in 2021.
The School would like to thank all of those who have contributed to QIISP over the years, and particularly the most recent iteration of our organizing committee - Naomi Alboim, Keith Banting, Margaret Biggs and Rachel Laforest - for their work in coordinating a wonderful series of discussions of the big social policy challenges of our time.
QIISP has brought together senior policy-makers, leading researchers, and community leaders to review recent research findings and discuss major directions in social policy. Its distinctive features — a focus on policy horizons, an international and comparative perspective, and the conjunction of research and policy – made it a unique and influential forum. Over the years, QIISP has benefited tremendously from the engagement and support of officials from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
Recently, QIISP focussed on some of the most pressing public policy issues of our time: “Building Back Better: Forging a pos-pandemic recovery that works for all” (2020),“Inclusive Prosperity: Recoupling Growth, Equity and Social Integration” (2019) and “The Future of Work” (2018). The School of Policy Studies is strongly committed to the values of QIISP, and is currently developing a new approach to social policy that aligns closely with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. We look forward to launching a new series of meetings that will build on the legacy of QIISP.
