⏩ The prescient words of the Honourable Murray Sinclair reverberated on September 30 as PCS students participated in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ( ) in the ?aq̓am Community as part of First Person, a Uprep@PCS program designed to introduce students to Indigenous history, language, culture and science.

The history of Canada’s residential schools is difficult to hear but important to learn 🧡

The Ktunaxa Nation’s Statement of Reconciliation emphasizes acknowledging historical truths and the survival and resilience of Ktunaxa people📍

Two days prior to the participating in the annual walk for Truth and Reconciliation, PCS students visited St. Eugene Resort, a former residential school, to hear the truth and learn more about the Ktunaxa Natuon’s ongoing and exceptional efforts being made to support reconciliation 🤝

Canada has a long way to go in support of this process but the future looks brighter thanks to learning opportunities like this one 🙏

More place-based/land-based learning, this time as a prelude to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

Last week, PCS students had the opportunity to visit Nupqu Native Plant Nursery, located in the ʔaq̓am Community of the Ktunaxa Nation📍 Operated by Nupqu Resource Limited Partnership, it is the largest Indigenous-owned plant nursery in Canada 🇨🇦

This state-of-the-art facility features eight greenhouses with the capacity to grow up to 700,000 native seedlings annually. The enterprise is focused on ecological restoration and land reclamation 🌱

The BC curriculum is at its best when it is Indigenous, interdisciplinary and place-based 🧡🤝🏞️

Gyotaku is the Japanese art of making fish prints🐟🎨 PCS students explored the annual Swaq’mu, Kokanee salmon run at Perry Creek. These tiny land-locked sockeye salmon die after spawning, and several recently-deceased salmon enabled students to learn about fish anatomy and create some salmon-inspired art at the same time 🧑‍🔬🖼️
