For midlife women who are tired of running on fumes and ready to fall in love with life again. Let's talk. pattinorris.com 🀍

You know the feeling I'm talking about, don't you.

Maybe it shows up as heat - the flash of anger, the tight chest, words coming out sharper than you meant them to.
Or maybe it shows up as quiet - the conversation gets to be too much, and something in you just checks out. Leaves the room without actually leaving the room.
And then comes the part that nobody talks about - the hours afterward.
Replaying it in the shower.
Narrating to yourself exactly how you failed.
Again.

Here's something that changed everything for me: my reaction was never actually the problem.

Trauma doesn't necessarily show up as a memory we can point to. It shows up in our reactions - the body remembering what the mind tucked away a long time ago, because back then, feeling it wasn't safe.
So that moment you went from zero to a hundred in three seconds flat, or the one where you went somewhere else entirely without moving an inch - that wasn't you malfunctioning. (Running and shutting down are my two best friends - I have had entire bang-up arguments with myself in my head, and "needed" to leave the room more times than I can count, sometimes in the same week. If heat is more your style, I see you too - same door, different knock.)
That was something old, finally finding a door.
You're not the only one. πŸ’›

So tell me... when overwhelm hits, does it show up as heat, quiet, or running?

Love, Patti

For most of my life, I could cycle through fight, flight, freeze, and fawn before lunch.
But fawning? That was my specialty.

I used to say yes to hosting the whole family for holiday dinners even when I was already running on empty.
I'd smile while I set the table.
Smile while I cleaned up.
Smile while something inside me quietly disappeared...and then tell myself this is just what you do.

People thought I was generous. I knew I just didn't feel safe enough to say no.
I didn't understand any of it until I finally learned what was actually happening in my nervous system.

Fight: zero to a hundred over something small, then an hour of hating yourself for it.
Flight: cancel the plans, dodge the conversation, disappear before anything gets hard.
Freeze: something big happens and you feel absolutely nothing. Just... gone. People think you're strong. You know you're just not there.
Fawn: become whoever the room needs you to be. Agree, accommodate, shrink, smooth it over. Keep everyone else okay so nothing explodes.

These aren't personality traits. They're programs. Written in an environment where you needed them to survive.
Here's what nobody tells you though. Your nervous system learned those patterns...and it can learn new ones.
Not perfectly.
Not all at once.
But gradually, the hair trigger softens.
The disappearing acts get shorter. The holiday dinners get a little more honest.
You get a little more honest.
And then life gets a little bit easier.
And a lot more joyful. (Go figure that you'd have more energy for joy when you're not burning yourself to the ground trying to make everyone else happy.)πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‰

Which one do you recognize most in yourself - and did you learn it from watching someone you loved do it first?

Love, Patti

Somewhere along the way, "working on yourself" became a full-time job. No salary. No sick days. And a performance review you're definitely failing. (According to you.)

If that's you, I don't think you're doing it wrong.
I do think you might be trying to solve a nervous system problem with a thinking solution...and those two things operate on completely different frequencies.
Kinda like trying to calm a startled cat by explaining to it that there's nothing to be afraid of. The cat doesn't speak logic. And neither does your nervous system.
I have had a lot of cats in my life, and there is essentially zero chance of calming them through logic...πŸ™ƒπŸ˜‰

Your brain can change. That's not just wishful thinking - that's neuroscience. But it doesn't change because you finally figured something out. It changes because you give it new experiences to wire from.

Healing isn't a conclusion you reach.
It's a direction you move in.
Maybe even a decision you make.

And here's the part that might actually change something for you today: you don't have to be finished to be okay.
You don't have to have it all sorted.
You are not a project with a deadline.
You're a woman in the middle of her life, doing something genuinely brave.

If this is landing for you, come find us in Finally Free - Women Thriving on Purpose.
It's a free group full of women having exactly this conversation every week.

What if I told you there's something that works like hand sanitizer...for your nervous system??

I know. Stay with me.

Your subconscious mind and thus, the rest of your body... doesn't know the difference between what's actually happening and what you keep thinking about.

That argument you replayed for three days? Your body lived through it three days in a row.

That 2am worry spiral that solved absolutely nothing but somehow kept going until 4? Your nervous system was in full emergency mode...over something that you actually have very little control over...if any at all.

Here's what the research actually shows: chronic stress - the kind that comes from rumination, resentment, and replaying worst-case scenarios not only makes you feel like crap in the moment, but it also suppresses your immune function.
Not metaphorically. Literally. Your body pulls resources away from healing and repair because it thinks it's still in danger.

So, let me be clear...I am not suggesting that you are weak for getting run down. In actual fact, your system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. (Its just a little overzealous sometimes...Bless its' little heart. ;)

The question worth sitting with is: what thoughts are you living in right now... and are they worth the rent they're charging you?
Because let's be real...some of those thoughts have been squatting in your head for years, paying nothing, and wrecking the place.

The interrupt doesn't have to be dramatic. A breath. A walk. A deliberate shift toward what's actually solvable right now.
Your nervous system is listening to everything you think. What do you want it to hear today?

Drop a 🧑 if this landed. And tell me - what thought has been living rent-free in your head a little too long?

You've spent so long tiptoeing around other people's reactions that you forgot you were allowed to have your own.

You apologize before you even finish your sentence.
You agree with things you don't actually agree with.
You read the emotional temperature of a room before you even walk through the door, and then you adjust yourself accordingly.
And you've probably spent years calling this being "easy to get along with."

Here's what's actually happening.
There's a nervous system response called fawning - and it's just as automatic as fight, flight, or freeze.
It kicks in when your system learned, usually a long time ago, that keeping the peace was the safest thing you could do.
That making yourself agreeable kept things from escalating.
That tiptoeing was smarter than standing still.

Here's the thing though...this wasn't just a personality flaw...it was adaptation.
And the thing about adaptation is...your nervous system can get very good at it...so good in fact, that you're still running that program long after the original situation is gone.
Which is why you're so tired.
Because you can't actually rest when you're always monitoring. You can't genuinely connect with others when part of you is always managing.

The women I work with often describe it as a feeling never feeling like they have fully landed anywhere...Like they are always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Sound familiar?
Here's the good news. Your nervous system learned this, which means it can unlearn it.
That's not wishful thinking.
That's how neural retraining actually works.

This is exactly what we dig into inside Finally Free.

If you're ready to stop tiptoeing - come join us. πŸ‘‡

You're not burned out because you're weak.
You're burned out because you've been running a race you never actually signed up for.

Somewhere along the way...probably long before you were old enough to question it - you absorbed a set of rules.
About how much you should accomplish.
How far along you should be by now.
That rest is something you have to earn, rather than the thing that allows you to actually survive and thrive.
And you've been running against those rules ever since.

Here's the thing nobody tells you: that finish line keeps moving. It's designed to. You will never catch it...and if you keep chasing it, you will eventually crash trying.
Maybe you already have.

That crash - the exhaustion, the flatness, the sense that something has to change but you don't even know where to start - that's not a failure.
That's your nervous system finally saying enough.
What would it feel like to actually put it down?

The women I work with inside Finally Free aren't learning how to push harder or organize their way out of burnout.
They're doing something more interesting - they're learning to recognize the old programming that's been running the show, and gently, deliberately, rewriting it.
Because here's what I know for certain: the voice that tells you you're behind? It was never actually yours.

If this is landing for you, come introduce yourself in the comments.
I'd love to know what race you're tired of running.

Can I tell you what I noticed while I was lying on the couch this week, absolutely flattened by a cold?

My very first instinct wasn't to rest.
It was to manage it.
Figure out the timeline. Minimize the disruption. Negotiate with my own immune system about when I'd be allowed to be human again.
And underneath the sneezing and the tea and the Netflix β€” there was this low-grade hum.
The one that says: you're falling behind. you're not doing enough. you're not enough, right now, as you are.
Sound familiar?
So many of us have spent so long living in "fix it" mode that we don't even recognize it as a mode anymore. It just feels like being. Always assessing. Always adjusting. Always somewhere between the woman we are and the woman we think we should be.
And here's the thing - all that managing and negotiating makes complete sense.
Every part of us just wants to feel better.
That's not a flaw in the wiring.
That's the whole point of the wiring.

The problem is that bracing against where we are - rushing past it, fixing it, optimizing it - is the one thing that makes "better" harder to actually get to.

Change needs presence. Even when presence looks like tea, tissues, and three episodes (or maybe even more!) of something you've already seen.
If this resonates, come find us. Finally Free - Women Thriving in Midlife is a private group where women are learning exactly how to get out of "fix it" mode - and into a life that actually feels like theirs.

If you've called yourself lazy in the last six months, I want to offer you a different word.
Exhausted.
And not the kind that a good night's sleep or a weekend off fixes. The kind that builds up quietly over years of managing everything and everyone...and eventually shows up as foggy, flat, and running on empty even when you're doing all the "right" things.

Here's something worth knowing: chronic stress literally rewires the way your brain manages energy, focus, and motivation. So if pushing harder hasn't been working - that's why.

Your brain isn't broken. It's overloaded.
And the answer, it turns out, isn't trying harder. It's understanding what your nervous system has been doing all along.

This is exactly what we talk about in my private group, and the conversation there might surprise you.
If you're ready to stop being hard on yourself and start actually understanding what's going on...and learn what you can do about it... come find us.
