The 4th International Conference on Forests and Water in a Changing Environment, Kelowna, BC, Canada, July 6-9, 2015

Forests play a vital role in sustaining water resources and aquatic ecosystems. Forest disturbance, both natural (e.g., wildfire, insects, disease, windstorms, drought) and human (e.g., timber harvesting, land conversion) caused, can have a profound effect on hydrologic, geomorphic and ecologic processes. With climate change, natural disturbances are becoming more frequent and catastrophic. This,

New Publication by UNESCO: "Forest Management and the impact on water resources: a review of 13 countries"

Trees have been around for more than 370 million years, and today there are about 80 thousand species of them, occupying 3.5 billion hectares worldwide, including 250 million ha of commercial plantations. While forests can provide tremendous environmental, social, and economic benefitsto nations, they also affect the hydrologic cycle in different ways. As the demand for water grows and local precipitation patterns change due to global warming, plantation forestry has encountered an increasing number of water-related conflicts worldwidethis document provides a country-by-country summary of the current state of knowledge on the relationship between forest management and water resources. Based on available research publications, the Editor-in-Chief of this document contacted local scientists from countries where the impact of forest management on water resources is an issue, inviting them to submit a chapter. A greater focus by future research on the interaction between forest management, water management and gender issues can help to better understand their interconnection and to identify ways to strengthen the management of both resources while fostering gender equality.

The upcoming conference is co-hosted by UBC Okanagan and the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO). For more information about the global network for forest and science cooperation visit us here: http://www.iufro.org/science/divisions/division-8/80000/80100/80107/

IUFRO: 8.01.07 - Hydrologic processes and watershed management / 8.01.00 - Forest ecosystem... The working scope of this unit is on eco-hydrological processes in forested watershed ecosystems. As water or hydrological process is commonly recognized as a unique watershed ecosystem linkage, an integrated or ecosystem based approach is needed for both research and management. The unit promotes i…

This, together with growing human disturbance, will undoubtedly affect water resources and consequently have significant implications for land managers and policy makers. Our understanding of hydrologic and ecologic response to accelerated environmental and land use change is key to the development of adaptive and mitigating strategies ensuring the continued security of water supplies and ecological values.

Building on the success of past international Forests and Water conferences (Beijing in 2006, Raleigh, NC in 2009, and Fukuoka in 2012), the fourth conference will focus on forest disturbance and hydrological processes in a changing environment. The goal of this conference is to provide a forum for experts specialising in forest hydrology, ecohydrology, geomorphology, watershed management and climate change in forested environments around the world to share research progress, exchange ideas, and develop international research collaborations.
