Nine years ago, Kamalpreet Kaur arrived in Canada from India. Nursing wasn't an option without permanent residency so she waited, earned her citizenship, and last week, she earned her degree.
Kaur received the Lieutenant Governor's Medal for Inclusion, Democracy and Reconciliation. She advocates for racialized and underrepresented nurses through the BC Nurses Union, is developing a peer support platform for new graduate nurses, and plans to pursue a nurse practitioner designation next year.
"I didn't feel it was possible for me, for a first-generation immigrant to receive such an honour. But it was magical."
