Edwin S Richards – Stronger Together: Building Parent Networks for Student Success

Parents of students with diverse needs face unique challenges in understanding educational processes, managing emotional stress, and coordinating care across school and community systems. While students with special needs receive IEP’s to support and guide their learning, it can be a challenge for parents to navigate the system and understand how their children are supported in school. A new program at ESR, ‘Stronger Together’, will consist of a series of expert-led sessions that we hope will be informative, allow parents of students with similar needs to connect, and build a stronger home-school partnership.

The first day back to school can be an especially hard transition. Below are some tips to hopefully make things a bit easier.

Sunday Emotional Reset (Save This for Tomorrow)

Tomorrow isn’t about uniforms or bags.
It’s about helping children feel emotionally ready to return to school.

After a break, many children feel a mix of excitement, worry, sadness, and overwhelm — even if they can’t name it yet. That’s not a problem to fix. It’s a nervous system asking for support.

Sunday is your chance to slow things down.
Lower the emotional load.
Create space for feelings without rushing to reassure.
Offer regulation before logic.

Small, intentional moments tomorrow can make a big difference to how Monday feels — especially for children who struggle with transitions, anxiety, or after-school restraint collapse.

👉 The Extended Parent Handout, Sunday Emotional Reset is available as a free download — instructions in visual.
Save this post today and come back to it tomorrow.

Understanding the major role the nervous system plays in behavior is so important. It's a major piece in how we help families understand the why behind their child's behavior. Dr. Mark Bowers gives a great explanation in the video below
