:Academic writing should be written in the Active voice typically. The Active Voice will make your writing clear and concise. In Active writing, the subject performs the action- i.e. Sue cooked the rice (who cooked the rice? Sue did). In a passive sentence, the subject receives the action- i.e. The rice was cooked by Sue (this sentence is not as clear and goes around the mulberry bush pretty much). So, if you are writing a paper and in the editing process find some sentences that seem passive, what can you do? Label the Subject, Verb and Object. Typically, if it is not in the proper order- S + V + O it is passive, so rearrange the order and you will have Active writing instead!

How To Teach Your Brain Something It Won’t Forget A Week Later Cramming got you through college, but it’s probably paying diminishing returns in your career. Here’s the scientific reason why.
: Do you ever wonder why a sentence just doesn't sound right? Perhaps, your subject and your verb do not agree. A singular subject needs a singular verb and a plural subject needs a plural verb. Sounds easy enough, but so many students forget this, as it sounds right in your own head at first. For example: The girl is very pretty. (single). The boy and his friends are going to the movies (plural). A contraction form, such as does not should be used only with a singular subject. Don't is a contraction of do not and should be used only with a plural subject. As with so many grammar rules, there are exceptions. The exception to this rule appears in the case of the first person and second person pronouns I and you. With these pronouns, the contraction don't should be used. e.g.. He doesn't like it. or They don't like it.Do not be misled by a phrase that comes between the subject and the verb. The verb agrees with the subject, not with a noun or pronoun in the phrase.e.g.The cheer leader, as well as her team, is anxious. Surprisingly, the words each, each one, either, neither, everyone, everybody, anybody, anyone, nobody, somebody, someone, and no one are singular and require a singular verb. e.g. Each of the drinks is cold. Some nouns appear to be plural, but are in fact single nouns. e.g. The news is on at 6pm. The formula to subject/verb agreement is to understand if your subject is singular (is it speaking about one thing) or plural (or is the subject a collection of things/people) and to use a suitable verb. Singular subject= singular verb and plural subject= plural verb.
: When asked to write a persuasive essay, keep in mind there are 3 types of persuasive appeals: Logical, Emotional and Ethical. Logical uses common sense and logic e.g.- Recycling saves resources. Emotional is centered at a reader's heart e.g.- We need to recycle to help reduce the destruction of animals natural habitats. Finally, an ethical appeal speaks to the reader's sense of right and wrong e.g.- We should not leave our trash for future generations to deal with! Identifying what type of appeal you plan to use will help focus your persuasive essay in that direction and as well, your persuasive argument will become more clear to the reader.
: Use transitions to make your writing flow better. Transitions, not only add sentence variety, but also signal to your reader where they are, and help them to understand the logic of your paper. However, before using a transitional word or phrase make sure you understand its meaning and make sure it is the right match for what you are trying to say. Different transitions have different purposes. For example, there are transitions for addition (e.g. Furthermore), for place (e.g. Nearby), for comparison (e.g. Likewise), for effect (Therefore) etc. As part of the "Six Comma Rules"- a comma always goes after a transitional word or phrase. Let Me Share What I Know with You!
Reading, Writing and Speaking (with Understanding ) are the three parts of learning any language.
Five main parts to teaching reading:
1. Phonemic awareness
2. Word recognition- sight words and Phonics
3. Comprehension (Understanding)
4. Vocabulary
5. Fluency
MY FOCUS:
1. The main focus is to give the student the foundations of reading, writing and basic literacy.
2. Develop the basic literacy learned in the first phase- together with thinking skills- it is all about making connections.
• Phonics- learning each letter, then sounding out the words, matching words
• Spelling- spelling tests- moving up difficulty with each step.
• Vocabulary development- via reading.
• Grammar and Punctuation- via writing
In learning any language, the following are essential: SKILLS- LISTENING- SPEAKING
The stages of reading development: The pre-reader, the emergent reader and the early reader.
Phonemic Awareness
Phonemes are the smallest parts of sound in a spoken. For example in the word "hat," the letter h represents the sound huh. The link between the sound and letter is called phonics.
Activities for phonemic awareness?
1. Listen, I'm going to say the sounds in the word. "jam- j-a-m.
2. What is the word?
3. The student says the word- "jam"
4. You say the sounds in the word jam.
5. The student repeats j/a/m
6. Now we're going to read jam
7. Now let's write the sounds in jam
/j/ write j;
/a/ write a;
/m/write m.
Word Recognition:
The two main elements involved in word recognition are phonics and sight words
1. Phonics (letter sounds and syllables): In the English language there are 26 letters in the alphabet, and 44 phonemes (sounds). e.g.- the a stands for different sounds in the words cat, car and cake.
2. Sight words (or "look and say" words) involve the learner recognizing a word by its shape, length or other features.
Comprehension:
To check whether learners are simply repeating or really understanding what they are reading.
Ways to do this: Activate the reader's prior knowledge, read aloud to learners, help learners to use clues and illustrations in and around the text, increase vocabulary and develop learner's thinking skills, like analyzing, evaluating and interpreting.
Vocabulary
To develop as readers, learners need to have knowledge and understanding of a wide range of words.
How to teach vocabulary?
• Make sure learners read regularly or listen to texts that interest them.
• Read aloud to learners at least once a week for 30 minutes. I suggest a story each night before bed. Stop and explain unknown vocabulary and/or meaning.
• Watch lots of movies in the language you are wanting to learn..
The ULTIMATE GOAL is Fluency.
Fluency in reading means the ability to read texts smoothly, accurately and with understanding.
