In Canada we use the word 'run' for the action of going to a place to pick up something.

Here are some common runs we do in Canada:

Sure, you might not want to use this in CELPIP but you better understand it because if you live in Canada, you're gonna hear it!

A MICKEY | Canadian Slang!

The word mickey can be used in many different ways, today we are looking at it from a Canadian lens!

A mickey is a small bottle of alcohol (this one threw me, because in my country mickey means something totally different).
⛷️When you go skiing, make sure to pick up a mickey of fireball to stay warm!
👨‍🏫When you go for backpacking, take a mickey of whiskey because a two four is just too heavy!
🍆When you are about to hook up with someone in a club, don't whip out your mickey😉

How can you use this in your CELPIP exam?
Easy, you went to the shop to pick up a mickey!
You were passing a mickey with some buds and...
If I were you, i'd pick up a mickey and...

There a million ways to use it, but the main purpose of this post is to help you understand some good auld Canadianisms!

Why are you not scoring high in CELPIP speaking? BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE STRUCTURE!

I don't care who you are - it doesn't matter if English is your first, second, third, fourth, or fifth language, if you don't have structure - you won't get a high CELPIP Speaking score!

CELPIP is as much a test of exam technique as it is English! I have helped native speakers of English improve their CELPIP speaking score so they can get higher CRS points - what makes you think you are any different?

Are you a keener?

Here is some more wonderful Canadian slang that you should know!

Is it positive or negative? Well it just depends.
In high school, were you a keener?
In college, were you a keener?
At work, are you a keener?

I think when people start a new job, they are keeners. However, once they learn the ropes they quickly realize being a keener may not be the best approach.

You should be a keener if you are studying for CELPIP, how can you be a keener if you are studying for CELPIP?

If you want a high score in CELPIP speaking task 5, use some of these phrases:
- I understand you prefer option B, but option A is better because...
- Another reason why I think this option is better is...
- Anyway, I hope you see where I'm coming from and I'm sure whatever you decide will be fine (conclusion).

If you drop those phrases into your CELPIP speaking task 5, you are on the right track for a high score!

This is easily one of the most frustrating things I see in CELPIP writing task 2.

Long story short: CHOOSE A SIDE, STICK TO IT!

In CELPIP Writing task 2 you need to explain why Option A is better than Option B (or vice versa). This means you should ONLY support one idea, not both!

This means you should not write anythig in favor of the other option. I have seen so many great answers in CELPIP writing task 2 that miss the mark because they write a paragraph explaining why the other option is also a good choice - NO!

Remember: CHOOSE A SIDE, STICK TO IT!

Here is some essential Canadian slang for you!

Give'r. Two letters, an apostrophe, and a whole lot of Canadian energy!

Give'r means to go all out. To give it everything you've got. To just do it — full speed, no hesitation.

You'll hear it at a hockey game, you'll hear it on a ski hill, you'll hear it when a person is about to do something risky, you'll even hear it from me if I'm next to you before your CELPIP exam!

It's basically Canada's version of "go for it" — but with more enthusiasm and less hesitation.

So next time someone tells you to give'r — you give'r. 🇨🇦
