I was so lucky to spend six weeks back in the homeland this summer. I’ve been home countless times since moving to Canada over a decade ago, but I have never been able to spend so much time at home in the summer and it was…. Amazing!

Here are some snaps of the trip to Ireland.

When I was back at home, I:
😎Went to castles
😎Saw hedgehogs
😎Drank some Guinness
😎Went hiking (wouldn’t be a Ronan holiday without hikes)
😎Swam in the sea
😎Went to countless saunas
😎Attended a wedding
😎Saw Mayo win the All Ireland (a highlight of the trip)
😎Hung out with my dog

Now I’m back in Canada and back to the regular swing of things.
New semester at my work, new students to meet and help, but compared to the previous Septembers when I never got a break from work, I feel ready!

I've had a lot of people reach out to me about CELPIP Speaking Task 5: Compare and Persuade.

This question is different in that there are two parts. First, you need to choose an option. After that, you need to defend and compare your choice to a brand new option.

Here are some tips for CELPIP Speaking Task 5:
🗣Speak directly to the listener
🗣Explain why their choice is good but yours is better
🗣Compare your choice to their choice
🗣Use comparative English (better than/more suitable than/etc.)
🗣Use compare and contrast English (however/while/on the one hand/etc.)
🗣Present an idea and support the idea (give examples, reasons!)

A run | Noun
In Canada we use the word 'run' for the action of going to a place to pick up something.

Here are some common runs we do in Canada:
😀A b**r store run
😀A timmys run
😀A Costco run
😀A w**d shop run
😀A liquor store run

So next time you are going to a place to pick something up, you can use the word 'run' to let people know!

What is a hoser?

Sure, you might not want to use this in CELPIP but you better understand it because if you live in Canada, you're gonna hear it!

A MICKEY | Canadian Slang!

The word mickey can be used in many different ways, today we are looking at it from a Canadian lens!

A mickey is a small bottle of alcohol (this one threw me, because in my country mickey means something totally different).
⛷️When you go skiing, make sure to pick up a mickey of fireball to stay warm!
👨‍🏫When you go for backpacking, take a mickey of wh***ey because a two four is just too heavy!
🍆When you are about to hook up with someone in a club, don't whip out your mickey😉

How can you use this in your CELPIP exam?
Easy, you went to the shop to pick up a mickey!
You were passing a mickey with some buds and...
If I were you, i'd pick up a mickey and...

There a million ways to use it, but the main purpose of this post is to help you understand some good auld Canadianisms!

Why are you not scoring high in CELPIP speaking? BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE STRUCTURE!

I don't care who you are - it doesn't matter if English is your first, second, third, fourth, or fifth language, if you don't have structure - you won't get a high CELPIP Speaking score!

CELPIP is as much a test of exam technique as it is English! I have helped native speakers of English improve their CELPIP speaking score so they can get higher CRS points - what makes you think you are any different?
