Want to know a secret? 🤫 Simple Wonders isn’t actually the original name I chose when we first applied for our business license. Thank GOODNESS someone -somewhere in BC- had already claimed the name I thought would be ours, because that slight disappointment is absolutely nothing compared to the overwhelming gratitude I feel now in the name that IS ours.
Simple Wonders has truly become so much more than just a name- it is the calling I feel so sure of as I spend the days with these incredible little people.
Most children these days are living such a different childhood than the one we lived 30 (ish) years ago. The jam packed schedules, extracurriculars, push for academics and constant entertainment that is thrown at them- little by little replacing the magic with pressure.
But I am convinced that most (all??) of the time, children need less.
Less structure, less rush, less adult directed activities, less expectations, less stimulation.
And honestly? It’s such a needed reminder for me through the days, too. It’s so easy (as a mom and an educator) to feel the pressure to do more. To plan more. To entertain more. But deep in my soul, I know this is not what children truly need. Most of all, children need us to simply BE with them- finding and celebrating the joy in the simple wonders all around us, every single day.
It’s never *just* a worm or a puddle or a leaf shaped like a heart.
It’s an invitation to reclaim the magic of childhood, and we will always say yes ✨.

To infinity, and BEYOND!
Welcoming new friends is always such an encouraging reminder to me of children’s need for connection and how it’s literally the foundation for everything else 🤍.
“Playtime needs to be prefaced with contact and closeness from an attachment figure so that a young child’s relational needs are satiated. It is helpful to think of a young child as having an attachment fuel tank that needs to be topped up to overflowing before play can happen.”

Connection 👉🏼 play 👉🏼 healthy brain development. Play is literally how children learn and grow and the most critical and valuable skills are developed and enhanced as they play. Play is absolutely essential, but connection and “filling their attachment fuel tank” is even more essential because it’s what makes true play even possible. Connection must ALWAYS come first 🫶🏼.

4 👉🏼 3 👉🏼 2 👉🏼 almost 1 years old 🫶🏼.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again and again and again) - the multi age design is my absolute favourite thing in the entire world. I will never go back to separating 3-5 year olds from 0-3 year olds into different classrooms. There is FAR too much magic that happens with the range of ages all blended together like this ✨.

10/10 recommend investing in some magnet tiles. And then investing in another set. And then one more for good measure!
It is absolutely mind blowing to see the creativity, focus + teamwork that happens with these simple little tiles. For months, they have CONSTANTLY been used in so many different ways - on their own or together with other toys. There are so many times I’ve had to do a double take and am actually blown away with what they have built, designed or crested as they describe it to me. Towers, spaceships, shoes, airplanes, a table, ice rink, jengafet’s lightsaber, hulks castle - the list goes on and on (and on and on and on).
They are the most simple, open ended toy that proves over and over that kids don’t need flashy, fancy toys to entertain them. Their imagination just needs to be given the green light and it’s GO time!
Magnet tiles are cool, but these kids are 100 times cooler 😎

Our favourite 3 muske-spidey-teers 🤍.
No - it’s not Halloween and no - they did not plan it. But I’m honestly not surprised at all that it happened! Best friends just have this telepathic way of KNOWING when the others are going to wear their spidey costumes!
Happy 19 days until Halloween - but really, who’s counting and really, who needs it to be Halloween to wear a full on Spider-Man costume? NOT US! 🕷️🎃👻
