The line between union politics and member representation & organizing can never be blurred
The moment that politics starts to influence how we represent members, is when we lose the trust of the membership.
Members don’t care about internal divisions.
They don’t care about sides, alliances, or agendas, they only want to be assured that their union will stand up for them when it counts.
That’s it.
When a member calls with a problem, they’re not calling a political faction, they’re calling their union.
When workers are deciding whether to organize, they’re not judging internal politics, they’re judging whether they can trust the people in front of them.
Strong leaders understand that you can have opinions, or disagreements, and even have internal battles. But when it comes to:
* Representing a member
* Handling a grievance
* Organizing workers
Politics gets left at the door.
The strongest unions aren’t the ones without disagreements, they’re the ones where leadership knows when to set them aside.
