Dr. Samuel Orton and Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction throughout the 1920's and 1930's. For nearly 100 years, this research - now commonly referred to as the "Science of Reading" - has been largely ignored by our faculties of education. It's time to empower teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to help EVERY child become a confident reader.

A huge thank you to McDougall Insurance & Financial and Grenville Mutual Insurance Company. Our small tutoring business was selected among over 550 applicants as one of the winners of their BIG Grant for Small Businesses! We are beyond grateful and will be using the funds to invest in training for our growing team of tutors to better serve the needs of the Ottawa community!

A great reminder that memorizing high frequency words alone does not translate to reading efficiency later on. It actually encourages children to rush and guess at words, creating inept reading habits down the road.

Rather than quiz your child on their sight word recognition, encourage them to slow down, look at each letter, and blend the sounds together (see video below). The ability to sound out unknown words is vital to fostering strong foundational reading skills.
