Toys

Task

Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the child having a large number of toys?

Toys are not just playthings. They are the building blocks of a child’s future. They teach our children about the world and about themselves. That is precisely why parents always want to provide their children with toys. The issue of concern here is regarding the number of toys children are given. While some parents fill their children’s’ rooms to the ceiling with toys, others limit the number of toys that children have to play with.

On the one hand, there are a few advantages to children having many toys. They have more variety to play with, and they can pick out their personal favourites from those toys according to their taste. Moreover, parents can be satisfied that their children have enough to play with when they are busy. Toys can also be great educational tools for a child’s learning development. Parents who choose these kinds of toys can be aiding their child’s ability to learn and grow, which I would suggest and good choices to make for a child. Toys are just fun. Children love them, so perhaps the advantages of just having a good time cannot be denied.

On the other hand, too many toys prevent kids from fully developing their gift of imagination. Kids learn to be more creative with fewer toys. Furthermore, children with fewer toys establish better social skills. They learn how to share with other children. Also, they develop a greater love for reading, writing, and art. Fewer toys also make children become resourceful by solving problems with only the materials at hand. And resourcefulness is a gift with unlimited potential. Children with fewer toys become less selfish. Those who get everything they want believe they can have everything they want. This attitude is definitely detrimental to a child’s upbringing. They do not even value the toys they have. Another advantage of not having a basement full of toys is that children are more likely to play outside and have much-needed physical exercise which results in healthier and happier bodies.

To conclude, toys are very much needed for the development of children, but there should be a limit on the number of toys a child should have. An excess of too many toys would not be advantageous.

Academic Task 1 Report - Water Use Around the World Pie Chart Sample

Task

The pie charts below show the percentage of water used for different purposes in six areas of the world.

The pie charts show the proportion of water that has been used in six continental areas all over the world in terms of three different categories. The trend suggests that agriculture and industry have used a vast majority of water in all six places globally. It can also be seen that the dominant purpose in the distribution of water consumption in North America and Europe was used by industry, and the remaining areas tended to use water for agricultural reasons.

The pie charts report that more than 70% of water usage in Africa, South America and the Asian regions was highest in the agricultural sector, with the highest proportion in this category being 88% which was recorded in Central Asia. The second highest agricultural water use can be seen in Africa and South East Asia at 84% and 81%. The lowest amounts of water used were seen in Central and Southeast Asia for domestic purposes, at only 7% for each one. Interestingly, there was an opposite trend reported in Asia for industrial and domestic water use when these categories are compared to North America and Europe.

By far the greatest percentage of industrial water usage was seen in Europe at 53%, with agricultural water use only being recorded at 32%, which was the lowest of all the other categories. Again, in Europe, the second-highest proportion of water consumption was allotted to domestic use, at 15%. Only South America recorded more in the domestic water use category, at 19%. Likewise, there was a similar situation in North America with industrial water use standing at 48%. This was followed by agricultural and domestic water use with figures of 39% and 13%.

Overall, the pie charts show that agricultural and industrial water use was the highest in the categories that are shown.

Dear Mrs. Pearson,

Hello, I am Darcy Shawinigan who rents a furnished two-bedroom apartment on the fourth floor. I’m in suite 414. I’m writing this letter to complain about the condition of the 4-seater sofa in the living room.

I have been living here for just over a week now with my wife and daughter and I am quite unhappy with the condition of the sofa. It’s too soft to sit on comfortably as it sags very low in the middle when three or more people are sitting on it. The springs or supports in the middle of it are broken. Additionally, it makes a loud creaking noise every time someone sits on it or gets up from it. It is just too uncomfortable to sit on.

In my rental agreement, it clearly states that the condition of the furniture must be in good shape and this couch is far from that. I am paying for a furnished apartment, so I feel it should be replaced because in its current shape it cannot be used. I would appreciate it if you could replace it with another one as this one cannot be fixed.
I hope that the sofa can be replaced as soon as possible. Please feel free to stop by my unit so we can discuss the sofa’s removal and replacement.

Task 2 Sample Essay - Testing

Task

Too much emphasis is placed on testing these days. The need to prepare for tests and examinations is a restriction on teachers and also exerts unnecessary pressure on higher learners. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There are few who can argue that at the university level in education there is a primary emphasis on testing. It goes without saying that knowledge at this level is based on exams and tests. I totally disagree that tests and examinations put too much restriction on teachers, while these tests do exert pressure on learners, they are absolutely necessary.

In my opinion, part of a teacher’s job is to give their students exams and tests, whether they be midterms or finals. I do not think any restrictions for testing are placed on a competent instructor in a classroom setting. If a student does not know the answer on an exam, it is their responsibility to find out the correct answer. Teachers must be responsible for teaching the course material, and they should also be required to test their students’ level of this knowledge. There are no restrictions for quality testing and education. They go hand-in-hand. If a university has no formal testing methods, and teachers feel they are too restricted by the process, then the entire educational system would need to be changed. Arguably, I think there is no other alternative to such a system where knowledge must be quantified for the assurance that the course material has been learned.

Alternatively, tests absolutely put pressure on young learners. But I think it is this pressure that makes all students strive to learn and gain the knowledge they need to be successful. Without any testing at the university level, how is a student’s measure of knowledge known? Students cannot be held responsible to just learn the material on their own. There are simply too many cheaters in an educational environment. Testing demonstrates that the knowledge has been taught, studied, and hopefully learned and retained for future use. If no pressure of tests were involved in the educational process, then it would create a system where performance at a high level is discouraged, when in fact it should be encouraged. Test care is designed to make students feel pressure, and if a student believes that tests are unnecessary then they should not be a part of any higher learning institution.

To conclude, I totally disagree that tests and examinations put too much restriction on teachers, while tests do exert pressure on learners, they are definitely needed at the university level.

Academic Task 1 Report - OPEC Oil Stacked Bar Chart Sample

The bar chart below shows the forecasted increases in world oil production by barrel for OPEC and non-OPEC nations from 1980 to 2020.

The bar chart shows the predicted increases in world oil production by barrel for three groups of OPEC labelled nations over a 40-year period from 1980 to 2020. The trend suggests that OPEC Middle Eat and Other OPEC had increased oil production, but only OPEC Middle East will do so until 2020. Non-OPEC production, on this timeline, has decreased and is forecasted to continue.

OPEC Middle East was relatively low from 1980 to 2000 with a production of only about 2 million barrels a day. By 2010, their production had dramatically increased to more than 8 million barrels a day, showing an increase that had quadrupled. By the end of 2020, the forecast for oil production in the Middle East will continue to rise to just over 15 million barrels a day. This further increase shows another doubling of the oil produced by these OPEC nations.

Non-OPEC production was quite high from 1980 to 2000 with under 10 million barrels being produced per day. This dropped 10 years later, by the end of 2010, with a production amount that was half of the previous barrel production. It is predicted to fall even more by 2020 with a forecasted amount of fewer than 1 million barrels produced. Other OPEC production is expected to drop over the projected forecast period, from about 5 million barrels of production between 2000 and 2010 to less than 1 million barrels of production for the predicted 10-year forecast.

Overall, OPEC Middle Eat and Other OPEC have increased oil production, but only OPEC Middle East will do so until 2020.

Task 2 Sample Essay - Teleworking

Task

‘Teleworking’, or the use of telecommunications to allow people to work from home, should be adopted by all employers in order to improve the quality of life of their staff. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

In the past decade, working from home or a remote place has been a popular trend. I believe that while a flexible workplace, in general, not only helps organizations and staff to save time and money, but they also ensure a higher quality of work with some employees being able to feel more comfortable in these environments. Conversely, I still do think that with some specific jobs, employees must go to a dedicated work time in an office.

Job positions which do not require much collaboration, or the sharing of ideas, and already have a known output expectancy could be done while at home. For example, outsourcing is commonly done from a person’s home, and a small number of Canadian IT firms hire outsourced jobs for this industry for very large Asian IT companies in order to keep costs low or to cut costs in every area of their business. Teleworking can also create more opportunities for outsourced companies or those individuals who are freelancers. These kinds of workers can take advantage of technologies like the internet and email to easily fulfill their job commitments. As a result, this trend creates a variety of working environments.

However, there are areas where teleworking is not a possible option. These include medical, chemical, and other physical fields, like in the oil and gas industry. These kinds of jobs require their workers to be on location in hospitals, laboratories, or other places since these jobs are connected directly to a patient, another person, or a natural resource. It is only at these workplaces where the job service can be performed. Additionally, with these kinds of jobs, less of the work is done alone or on a computer. Service industry jobs, like medicine and fieldwork, require teams of people to work together, as well as independently, but not like a lone freelancer.

In conclusion, although technological breakthroughs have brought benefits to people who are freelancers allowing them to work from their homes, there are many fields that still require their workers to be at the workplace each and every day.

Academic Task 1 Report - The Number of Shops Openings and Closings from 2011 to 2018

Task

The line graph below shows the number of shops that closed in the number of new shops that opened in one country between 2011 and 2018.

The line graph shows shop closures and openings in a given nation for a seven-year period of time from 2011 to 2018. The trend suggests that both figures were in decline, though most noticeably the number of openings. After a lot of erratic fluctuations for both categories, by the end of the period, closures had become more common.

In 2011, there were approximately 8,500 openings in the country, which was significantly higher than the 6,200 closures. Over the next several years, openings dropped to a low of 4,000 and then partly recovered to 6,100 in 2014. Openings were more stable and rose to a high point of 7,100 in 2013 before reaching nearly the same level as closures in 2014.

After this point, closures fell dramatically to just 600 in 2015 before returning to slightly depressed levels and finishing the time surveyed at 5,100. In contrast, openings declined to a much lower amount at around 4,000 between 2015 and 2017, and then dipped again to end at 3,000, precisely in 2018.

Overall, after a lot of variability with closures and openings during the seven years that are shown, closures ended up being more common than openings.
