Meet Andrew from Sagkeeng First Nation, who works in special projects with Treaty One Nations.

Andrew enrolled in the Tax Administration Certificate Program as Treaty One Nations are in the early stages of developing their taxation and assessment laws, while working toward all seven nations being scheduled under the FMA. Once that work is complete, they’ll move forward with implementing taxation — and Andrew is eager to help lead that next phase.

So far, Andrew says the program has been “really great.” When he first started, he wasn’t sure what to expect, but with each course, things are starting to click. Being able to return to work and apply what he’s learned has helped bring all the pieces together.

Fun fact: Andrew is about to become a dad this September!

After several years of a curriculum renewal, we’re excited to talk about the Certificate in First Nation Applied Lands Governance program coming this Fall!

Delivered through a partnership between the First Nation Land Management Resource Centre (RC), the Tulo Centre of Indigenous Economics (Tulo Centre) and Thompson Rivers University (TRU), this program is about more than learning, it’s about building the skills to support self-governance in your community.

With expert guidance, hands-on experience, and a curriculum grounded in Land Governance core competencies, students gain the tools to turn their vision into action, and steward the land with care.

Before I began the program, I had no idea how many free tools were out there for First Nations, like Kwun’nun, FNII, and all the support from the FNTC. All these tools and supports are things I’m bringing back home that will really help our community build a stronger local economy. The best part is knowing I’ll always have those recordings and resources to refer to in the future.”
