On the donuts and bike podcast, Lindsey Richter aka opens up and discusses mountain biking impact on her mental health.

The sport demands your attention - and when you’ve put your self in that situation, “you’re forced to only think thoughts that serve you.

Thoughts that keep your wheels moving forward. “

Brooke Galey was the only woman at the start line of her first enduro race. The riders around her waited between stages, made sure she got down safely, and showed her what this community can be at its best - She has spent the years since making sure other women find that same welcome, sooner.

Her path back to bikes was not simple. Brooke fell in love with riding on the road, moved to cross country on a hardtail, then significant health challenges took her off the bike for several years. The comeback started when she and her husband invested in modern geometry mountain bikes. From that point she was hooked all over again and has not looked back.

Today Brooke is a ride leader and committee member with Shredding Betties, Australia's first mountain bike club specifically for women and girls, founded in Tasmania in 2017. She mentors riders, runs community rides, organizes events, and manages the club's social media. Guiding newer women through their first technical sections, sharing bike setup advice, being a consistent and approachable presence on the trail, her work is about making the sport feel accessible to the riders who need it most. That is the kind of work the GSMBC Scholarship Award was created to support.

Nishma Shrestha learned to mountain bike in Nepal with no coaches, no structured programs, and no map for where the sport could take her. So she built her own.

Riding with friends and figuring things out trail by trail, Nishma went from riding for fun to becoming one of Nepal's first women to work as a full-time mountain bike guide. She won gold in women's downhill at the 2019 South Asian Games, took the Nepal National Downhill Championship in 2022, and has lined up for more than 60 races. She was also featured in Moksha, a film about Nepali women finding freedom through the sport.

The moment she points to as most formative was not a podium. In 2018 she rode with a big group of women for the first time, after years of riding mostly with men, and it felt like a different sport entirely. That ride is the blueprint for everything she builds now.

Today Nishma runs Skills & Thrills Nepal, her own coaching business focused on skills sessions for women and beginners, creating the safe, structured learning spaces that did not exist when she started. Her long-term goal is to open mountain biking to women and young riders in places where opportunities are limited, the same kind of places she came from. Building access where there was none is exactly what the GSMBC Scholarship Award exists to recognize.

When students are kept consistently within terrain they can already manage, at speeds they are already comfortable with, executing technique they have already consolidated, the learning environment feels safe and positive. Often it is. But it is also stalling. The body does not build capacity it is not being asked for, and in MTB, where skill development depends on movement pattern acquisition across varied terrain and conditions, staying comfortable means the patterns that need to change never receive a signal to change.

We frame the challenge through three tools: technique, speed, and terrain. Change one variable at a time, in that order of consequence. Technique first, because demanding better ex*****on is the lowest-risk way to raise the difficulty without adding physical exposure. Speed second, once the movement is consolidating. Terrain last, and only when the skill is holding under the previous demands. This sequencing keeps the learning productive and the risk managed.

What the research also shows, and what experienced coaches tend to confirm, is that the correct challenge level and the safest lesson are usually the same lesson. An engaged student, one who is slightly outside their comfort zone but not overwhelmed, is focused, responsive, and executing with more precision than the student who has mentally checked out because nothing on the trail is asking them a new question.

The intermediate plateau is rarely a ceiling. It is usually a sign that the three levers have not moved in a while.
