It’s a great opportunity to observe Clover during his feeding and enrichment session while learning more about his natural behaviours, diet, habitat, and the unique characteristics of his species.

Meet Duncan the Barn Owl, our newest member at the Park!

At just 5 months old, Duncan is already beginning an exciting new chapter here at the BC Wildlife Park. But his story actually began with a very unexpected arrival!

Duncan’s mother came to the BC Wildlife Park hidden in a load of hay from Washington. She was later moved to Vancouver Island to The Raptos, where we made an agreement to take one of her babies if she had any. We waited patiently and at the end of March, Duncan was born!

Now, Duncan is starting to get acquainted with his new surroundings and the other animals at the park. In this video, you can see some of his early introductions as he begins his training and prepares for his important role as an animal ambassador.

Duncan will be supporting our education programs through public demonstrations, educational activities, training demonstrations, animal encounters, and meet-and-greets.

We’re so excited to watch Duncan grow into his role and help visitors learn more about these incredible birds!

Happy 16th Birthday, Autumn!

Autumn the elk is officially 16, and Zookeeper Sabien had the perfect way to celebrate with a special enrichment cake prepared just for her.

Of course, Autumn wasn’t the only one interested in the cake! Spring and Summer quickly came over to see what she had received and helped themselves to a few bites too.

Autumn and the rest of our elk are important ambassadors for their species. Seeing them at the Park gives visitors the opportunity to learn more about elk, their behaviours, adaptations, and their important role in British Columbia’s ecosystems.

Make sure to visit the elk on your next trip to the BC Wildlife Park and wish Autumn a very happy 16th birthday!

Update: They All Hatched!

We have some exciting news from our rehabilitation staff: all of the Western Painted Turtle eggs have now hatched!

To fill you in, back in June, a Western Painted Turtle was brought to our rehabilitation centre after being struck by a vehicle. Sadly, her injuries were too severe for her to recover. During her examination, our team discovered she was carrying five eggs. The eggs were carefully removed and placed in an incubator, giving them a chance to develop.

The first two hatchlings emerged on August 5 and 6, and just a few days later, the remaining three eggs hatched, bringing the total to five hatchlings. All five of the eggs were successfully hatched!

The hatchlings will remain in our care over the coming weeks before being considered for release into Turtle Valley, where their mother was originally found.

It’s National Honey Bee Day!

There’s a lot happening in your garden that might go unnoticed. While honey bees move from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they’re also helping pollinate many of the plants we rely on for food.

Bees and other pollinators play an important role in healthy ecosystems, supporting the reproduction of flowering plants that provide food and habitat for many species.

Want to give bees a helping hand? Here are a few simple ways to celebrate National Honey Bee Day:

• Plant native flowers and choose varieties that bloom throughout the season.
• Reduce or avoid pesticide use in your garden.
• Let a small area of your yard grow a little more naturally.
• Support local beekeepers and locally produced honey.
• Add pollinator-friendly plants to your garden, patio or balcony.

Even a small patch of flowers can provide an important food source for visiting pollinators.

Today, take a closer look at the flowers around you. You might be surprised by how many pollinators are already at work.
