What a wonderful day at the Painted Turtle Artisan Market!

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday at the BC Wildlife Park. It was great to see so many visitors spending the day at the Park, shopping local, and supporting our community.

Have you ever wondered if you can tell a female wolf from a male just by looking at one?

Sijja is our 12-year-old female Arctic wolf, and while males and females share many of the same physical features, females are generally smaller and lighter. Their thick double coat provides insulation against extreme cold, while relatively small ears help reduce heat loss in Arctic environments.

And here’s something you might notice in this video: watch Sijja’s ears, eyes and body posture. Wolves rely heavily on body language to communicate, and even small movements can tell us a lot about how they are responding to their surroundings.

Come visit Sijja at the BC Wildlife Park and spend some time observing these behaviours for yourself. We’re open daily from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with last admission at 3:30 PM.

Cloud is taking over !

Take a closer look at Cloud’s tongue in this photo. Did you notice how dark it is?

That dark colour is completely natural. Mountain goats can have dark grey, brown or almost black tongues because of melanin, the natural pigment responsible for colour in skin, hair and other tissues.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Mountain goats are adapted to living at high elevations, where exposure to UV radiation can be stronger. Dark pigmentation in exposed tissues may help provide some protection from UV radiation.

So, Cloud’s tongue isn’t just perfect for . Its dark colour is also an interesting characteristic of mountain goats!

Do our pigs snuggle at night?

That was Zookeeper Sabien’s question, and after wondering about it for long enough, she couldn’t resist finding out! She decided to take action and set up a nocturnal camera inside the pig house to see exactly how Orson, Archie and Annie spend their nights.

After checking the footage, Sabien got her answer: yes, they do! Orson, Archie and Annie like to sleep very close together inside their pig house.

The camera also revealed something else about their nighttime routine. Orson is usually the first one to settle in for the night, sometimes going to bed as early as 6:00 PM and not getting up until around 8:00 AM!

At 15 years old, Orson has a different nighttime routine than Archie and Annie, who are both only 4 years old.
Make sure you turn the volume up so you can hear the snoring too!

The night camera gives our Animal Care team another way to observe the animals behaviour and routines when the Park is quiet.

It’s Velvet Shedding Season for Kirk and Yukon!

Our two caribou, Kirk and Yukon, have now both shed the velvet from their antlers. Kirk is 3 years old and Yukon is 2 years old, and although their timing may differ, velvet shedding is a natural part of the annual antler cycle for caribou.

Each year, caribou grow a new set of antlers. While the antlers are growing, they are covered by a soft layer of skin called velvet. This velvet contains many blood vessels that supply nutrients to the developing antlers.

Once the antlers have finished growing, the blood supply to the velvet decreases. The velvet begins to dry and shed, exposing the hardened bone underneath. During this process, you may notice pieces of velvet hanging from the antlers or even some blood. Although it can look concerning, this is a normal part of velvet shedding and does not necessarily mean the caribou are injured or in pain.

Now that Kirk and Yukon have both shed their velvet, their hardened antlers are fully exposed.
