Vancouver Film School Hosts Workshop & KSA Students Have Great Time Learning About Auditions!
Today senior drama students had the opportunity to work with the Vancouver Film School.
The workshop was intensive and the VFS personnel spent a lot of time filming, giving feedback and teaching our students valuable skills that are vital for successful auditions.

Here is a little information we learned about the school itself:
VFS has 13 post-secondary diploma programs which teach techniques and skills which are key to any career in acting, animation, film and TV production, screenwriting, programming, makeup, sound, etc.

VFS’s educational model balances theory with production experience, so students are well versed in the essentials. The VFS is recognised internationally and has award-winning instructors and mentors from within the industry. VFS curriculum is kept up-to-date to meet the ever-changing demands of the industry.

VFS is located in downtown Vancouver, B.C. There are 8 campuses which offer lots of workshop and production spaces, a green screen room, film sets, studios, screening rooms, theatres, and 24/7 access to computer labs with industry-standard software.

Students Return from Island Inspired and Tired!
For many students it may be the first time they’ve left town without their family.ts them. So many skills can be picked up in the process of travelling together, participating in an educational workshop with professional actors, directors and musicians, and performing in public. In fact, preparing for and taking part in a trip to do a band performance can produce a lifetime of benefits.

The amount of fund raising that goes into an extended performance trip – including the tasks of fund raising and working hard to meet a set goal to afford what is no doubt an expensive excursion – should be invaluable in helping a student learn how to plan, how to budget, how to set goals, and how to meet them: all critical life skills and we hope the students take the responsibility of fundraising seriously.

As a musician or actor, a student can never have enough experience performing in front of an audience. From rehearsals to sight-reading charts, from costume or concert dress prep to hitting the stage together, if a student has any aspirations of making performance part of his or her future vocation, public experience is mission-critical.

If our department directors put the right kind of planning and thought into a trip, they have the chance to make a lifelong impact on some of their students; to give some of those students their “aha moment” and perhaps highlight a path for their futures that they may not have considered before. Travel, post-secondary schools, educational pursuits - it may all start from an inspiring trip with peers led by caring staff and awesome parent volunteers!

As you may notice when you come in the front entrance way, there is a delightful little collection of flowering plants in our flower bed to welcome visitors. This cheery splash of colour will see a wider variety of plants and a denser planting for a bigger flash of colour thanks to the support of the KSA PAC.
This flower bed is one of the outdoor projects that provides an opportunity for students to learn the caring routines needed to maintain this type of flower bed. In addition, the class maintains garden projects in the courtyard as well.
Experiential learning is significant component of the BC Curriculum and is key to the First People Principles of Learning too. We look forward to seeing this flower and garden project grow!

KSA Students Enjoyed Axé Capoeira - Need we say more?
KSA hosted a full day of specialized movement workshops for students in grades 1-7 on Thursday.
Here is a little information from the group we had in to work with our students.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art developed in the 1500s by African and Indigenous slaves in Brazil as a form of self-defence from their oppressors. It is marked by its agile and tricky movements that may be executed anywhere from an upside-down position, to a gravity defying kick. It has a strong acrobatic component in some styles and is always played with music. The word Capoeira is an indiginous word meaning ‘tall grass’. If slaves managed to escape, they would often use this grass to hide in and ambush their masters.

There are two main styles of Capoeira, along with many other less distinct ones. One is called Angola, which is characterized by tricky, low play with particular attention to the rituals and tradition of Capoeira. This style is often described as slow, however, may be just as fast as the next style, but with different rituals. The other style is Regional, known for its fluid acrobatic, high-flying kicks and powerful attacks. Speed and agility are common traits of this style. Both styles of Capoeira are marked by counter attacks, feints, and use lots of ground movements along with elbows, hands, kicks, head-butts,sweep and other take-downs.

The importance of Capoeira for children is not only in the historical and cultural aspect, but also in the physical qualities it helps develop; balance, motor coordination, speed, strength. It also helps to develop the potential of each child to learn in life, in school, and has a positive influence in their life in general.

In depth study of Capoeira encourages discipline, helps to teach and instill the value of loyalty, responsibility and self-confidence. In this way it helps in the positive formation of those who participate and become involved in the practice of Capoeira

Involvement with Capoeira awakens the musical, physical, artistic and creative sides of the children who practice this art form. Capoeira is an excellent way for children to develop strength of mind and body.

Battle of the Books is a very exciting way to build a reading team. Team members get to work together to cover as much material as possible for the Zone and District Games or what we call "battles".
Here is what the teacher organizers have to remember when designing the battles.

1. Each question will begin with “In what book....”
2. Use the present tense and correct grammar.
3. All questions must incorporate a quote from the book.

Gr. 3/4 team 2nd place
Gr. 5 team 2nd place
Gr6/7 team 1st place

All going onto Districts!!!

All teams were working as a team, communicating, compromising, and supporting each other! It was great to watch!

From the handbook here is a little history of the "Battle of the Books" in Kamloops.
"In the spring of 1987, Faith Bailey introduced the Alaskan
Reading Motivation Program to the teacher/librarians
with the idea of adapting it to meet their needs.
In the fall of 1987 a group of teacher-librarians reorganized
the program to incorporate Canadian content and
developed a district model.
The first official district battle was held at Parkcrest
Elementary School on April 13th, 1988. Eighteen
elementary schools from the district participated. The
Kamloops Battle of the Books has grown to have as many
as thirty elementary schools in the program."
