Research doesn't always happen in a lab.

Sometimes it starts with a simple question: Why do we order more food than we can eat?

TRU Tourism faculty member Dr. Yaou Hu's latest research explores how menus' communication of portion sizes can influence what people order.

Her research found that when diners have a clearer idea of how much food they're ordering, they're less likely to over-order and waste food. It's a simple idea that could help restaurants reduce waste while helping customers make more informed choices.

With wildfires burning across British Columbia and across the country, many of us are thinking about the immediate impact on people, communities and the landscapes we love.

But wildfire is also a reminder that there's important work happening long before a fire starts.

Understanding how we manage forests, learning from Indigenous approaches to land stewardship, and exploring how communities can become more resilient all play a role in preparing for the future.

That's why TRU offers the Sociocultural Dynamics of Wildfire Certificate. It's a program built around understanding the human side of wildfire and the relationships between people, land and community.

Tourism isn't just about where people go.

It's about the people and places that make those experiences possible.

It might not feel like it yet, but fall will be here before we know it.

🎿 Were you injured on the hill — or do you work on one?

TRU student Duncan Knight wants to hear from you. Duncan, a Master’s student at Thompson Rivers University, is researching why in-bounds skiing and snowboarding accidents happen at resorts across Western North America.

He’s looking for two kinds of people to interview:

👉 Anyone injured while skiing or riding at a resort
👉 Industry pros — patrol, lift ops, grooming, or other on-hill roles — who can speak to resort injuries

It’s a relaxed 20-minute chat, and participants can stay anonymous or be credited in the report. The study is open to current TRU students and alumni alike.
