TRU Supplemental Learning

TRU Supplemental Learning Supplemental Learning (SL) is academic support linked to challenging introductory courses. Students are free to attend weekly sessions on their own time.

SL sessions provide opportunities to study with peers informally — and yet with a planned and strategic approach. Sessions are led by a student who has previously mastered the course and knows what it takes to succeed. Sessions integrate how-to-learn (study skills) with what-to-learn (course content) in a collaborative setting. Check the current Session Schedule to find out if any of your courses are supported by SL.

Hey everyone, I know this is a long post (and many posts) but stick with me. Here is everything for most of the courses. Once again, if there are any questions, let us know:
ACCT 2210+1000: There’s a Moodle SL course in place for you (Supplemental Learning Accounting 1000/2210), with an exam review activity and another couple posted. Several students are enrolled. If you’re not yet, consider enrolling yourself and follow their direction.

· BIOL 1210: There’s a Moodle course set up for SL (BIOL 1210 - Supplemental Learning), with activities posted for the week, and participants already enlisted. If you’re not yet enrolled, consider it.

· BIOL 1692: Katie & Cody are providing support via Moodle, and also timed in line with exam review scheduling. Please enroll via Moodle:

· CHEM 1510/1520: Jasmine & Alex have a Moodle site (SL_CHEM 1510/1520 - Principles of Chemistry), and will be posting that for students to enroll in soon. They’ll be posting some activities and planning exam review activities and support.

· CHEM 2220: Julianna has set up Moodle support, and is keeping to a session schedule, with posted resources, at CHEM 2220_01_02_SL - Organic Chemistry, https://moodle.tru.ca/course/view.php?id=13038

· PHYS 1200: Brandon has a Moodle site (Supplemental Learning PHYS 1200), and soon will be in contact to post activities and a plan for support, and to invite participants.

· GEOG 1000: Narain has set up an SL Moodle course for you (GEOG 1000_SL - Introduction to Earth System Sciences). The site is well organized, with some direction, and lots of resources. Watch for directions to enroll, and for activities for study and review.

· GEOG 1010: Breena & Narain have established this Moodle course for you: GEOG 1010_SL - Introduction to Human Geography. The site is well organized, with some direction, lots of resources, and review activities to come.

· GEOG 2050: Breena has the following in place for you: GEOG 2050 SL - Introduction to Hydrology. The site is well organized, with direction, lots review activities and resources. Participants are already engaging with the support.

· PHIL 1110, and PHIL 2220: Tim has established a single Moodle course, for both: "Supplemental Learning for Philosophy 1110 and 2220 (Winter 20)" (enrollment key is reasoning).

· PSYC 1110: PSYC 1110 – Cassidy & Devon have the SL Moodle site (Supplemental Learning for Intro Psych), and soon will be in contact to post activities and a plan for support, and to invite more participants.

· PSYC 2100: tbd

· LAWF 3010 + 3070: Kate & Monica, and Angelica & Cory, are providing support and connecting via FaceBook. They’re posting materials and activities bi-weekly, holding to their scheduled session and review timing.

Hi everyone, I hope everyone is doing well at this moment in time! With school no longer in session, we have been working around the clock to continue to provide support for our courses. As many teachers have already sent out details, checking those out would be wonderful. We will also be sending messages out on how to log in and other information via Facebook! We’re closing the R 1:30 session for PSCY 2100. The M 12:30-1:20 OM 1751 session seems to work for students, and that one’s definitely open. Please let Devon know if you want to attend, but this time won’t work for you. Thanks!

What drew me to become an SL leader?
The possibility of helping someone achieve the satisfaction of being able to understand a topic in more detail.

I never go to class without:
a notebook and a clear mind.

The best advice I’ve ever received:
“Never trade long term goals for short term satisfaction.”

What I wish I’d known on the first day of the university: Don't focus on more than you can handle.

I didn’t think I needed SL until:
I attended my first session. Practising alone and practising with guidance are very different. 1 Hour of SL can be more powerful than 3 hours of self-study.

What drew me to become an SL leader?
In science, there are a lot of initial courses and a lot of SL sessions that coincide. Taking advantage of the opportunities, I met a lot of SL leaders and got to know some very well. They helped me stay on top of my course work, and they stayed on top of their own; I looked up to them. I became an SL leader to help other students... I wanted to be like the leaders I had previously.

I never go to class without:
paper and a pen. Although I often take a lot of notes on my computer, I always find times when handwritten notes become useful. There’s something about drawing or writing essential things by hand that helps with the learning process.

The best advice I’ve ever received
is not to compare yourself to others. This is easier said than done, but it will help reduce stress and take a load off your mental health. Everyone is different, and everyone has to forge their own paths. There’s no right way to reach your goal…Make yourself happy and do the best you can.

What I wish I’d known on the first day of university:
TRU is smaller than other universities, which allows you really meet and know your teachers well. Find some time to talk to them. Most are very willing to help with concepts you may not have understood, and they take time to help you succeed.

Also, It takes a while to explore campus and find the best places to study. See where you focus best and are less distracted. Different buildings, and even levels of each building, change the entire atmosphere.

I didn’t think I needed SL until:
SL was a life saver in first year; however, by my second year, I thought I knew how to study and succeed on my own. Then I took my first o-chem. midterm. After getting back that grade, I knew I had to get some help and pull my mark back up, and SL helped with that. By the time the final came around, I understood the concepts that I had previously overlooked and felt prepared. I believe SL saved my grade in that course.

This weeks Tuesday Leader of the Week is Devon de Vries.

My best or most memorable SL moment… would to be the anxiety I felt before attending the first session. It seems silly in hindsight, but I was so nervous about having to talk with strangers. It all got better after that first session.

What drew me to become an SL leader?
Communal learning. In psychology we're taught the importance of strong social support for an individual; the same principles can be said about an individual's learning.

I never go to class without:
A stapler. It's the handkerchief of the office supply world.

Best advice I’ve ever received:
"... never let school interfere with [your] education." - Mark Twain. This quote has taught me to prioritize the value of learning and information over the credentials and certificates that schools provide.

I didn’t think I needed SL until:
I was convinced by a friend to attend a session. Within ten minutes someone shared a way they understood a concept and it just clicked. Seeing the problem another side helped solve the bigger puzzle.

I didn’t think I needed SL until:
I was studying with my fellow students who didn't attend sessions. For some reason I had remembered some random but important facts from the course material and I realized it was because of the different activities from the SL sessions. It was encouraging to see how much more I knew because of attending one 50 minute session a week.

I never go to class without:

A water bottle and a snack. There is nothing worse than being thirsty or hungry in the middle of a lecture. This is also my key to staying awake if I’m very tired. Drinking water or munching on a snack wakes me up surprisingly well!

What I wish I’d known on the first day of university:
Was that the semester will go by so fast! So enjoy each class and make the most of your time. You ‘ll only be in first year once!

My most memorable SL moment:
Was when one of the students attending with me wrote out an entire chemistry problem on the whiteboard with a permanent marker. We worked together on the chemistry problem and solved it and then worked together on the permanent marker problem and solved it. Funny times.
