The Sustainability Office at TRU works to design and implement the Campus Strategic Plan sustainability components through advocacy, communication and coordination including supporting sustainability research and cost-effective green initiatives. It provides support and resources for students, staff, and faculty who are interested in making TRU The University of Choice for Environmental Sustainability. We welcome your questions on sustainability initiatives, and your suggestions on how to further reduce TRU’s carbon footprint on campus and in the community in the areas of energy, water, food, recycling and zero-waste, transportation, reporting, materials, and engagement. Through working together we can bring about change. Through the TRU Sustainability Grand Fund, TRU students, staff, and faculty can make a positive difference on campus. Let’s help make TRU .

Congratulations to Sophia, our BioBlitz Bingo winner! 🎉

Sophia, a TRU Horticulture student, completed a Bingo on her BioBlitz Bingo Card and won herself a $50 TRU Dining Card!

And in true horticulture student fashion, she even mowed the lawn outside our office when she stopped by to pick up her prize! 😂🌿

You’ve probably walked through the Brown Family House of Learning plenty of times, but there’s a lot going on behind the scenes that you might not notice. 🌱

The House of Learning is one of TRU’s LEED-certified buildings, which means sustainability was considered right from the way it was built to how it operates today.
A few things to look for next time you’re there:

☀️ Lots of natural light to help reduce energy use
♻️ Recycled and more sustainable building materials
💡 Energy-efficient systems throughout the building
🌿 A design that considers the surrounding environment

LEED certification also looks at things you can’t necessarily see, including water efficiency and indoor environmental quality.

Next time you’re in the House of Learning, have a look around. You might notice a few things you hadn’t before.

The sun is doing more than keeping campus warm. ☀️

TRU’s solar-powered charging tables let you plug in your phone or other small devices while you’re outside. So if you’re studying between classes, meeting up with friends, or just looking for a spot to sit for a bit, you can charge up at the same time.

The tables were made possible through a Sustainability Grant, along with a lot of persistence from Kathleen and some hard work from Sid, Levi and Warren to get them up and running.

Next time you’re walking by, pull up a seat and let the sun do the charging. 🔋☀️

Kamloops has hills. A lot of them. 🚲😅

But GoByBike Week doesn’t mean you have to bike your entire commute.

Ride part of the way and take the bus the rest. Kamloops buses have bike racks, so you can combine the two.

And if you only ride a kilometre? That still counts.

And if you haven’t joined in yet, you’re not too late. Every ride between today and September 25th counts, even if it’s just a kilometre.

TRU students, staff and faculty can join our Folks on Spokes team, log their rides and be entered to win prizes, including a $100 gift card to a local bike shop.

So don’t let that hill between you and campus talk you out of it. 😉

Do you have some time to spare tomorrow morning? We are looking for 9 more individuals to join us on Wednesday, Sept. 23, for a morning of tree planting at TRU with TRU Horticulture.

Come stop by TRU’s BioBlitz tent today, Tuesday, Sept. 22.

If you are a TRU student, staff member, faculty member or just curious, come help us spot and record the plants, insects, birds and other species that call our campus home.

No biodiversity expertise required. We’ll be using iNaturalist to record what we find, and we can show you how it works when you get there.

🕙 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
📍 In front of Old Main. Look for the big blue Sustainability Office tent.

Fall is a great time to get around campus on two wheels. 🚲

Whether you bike to TRU every day or you’ve been thinking about giving it a try, there are a few resources on campus that can make it a little easier:

🔒 Free secure bicycle storage on campus
🔧 Tune-up tools and an air pump at the TRU bike shelter
⚡ E-bike discounts for permanent TRU employees

And good timing: Fall GoByBike Week runs September 19–25, 2026.

Ride for a day, ride all week or use it as the excuse you needed to leave the car at home. 🚲
