Blue is the RAREST colour to see in nature! Blue green elf cup, green stain, fungus, blue stain, greenwood cup, etc. is a stunning fungus that belongs to the genus Chlorociboria. They create a beautiful blue-green pigment called Xylinden, which is stunning to observe and highly valued in woodworking.

It’s squishy, soft, spongy, and sometimes… PINK?!! Sphagnum moss is a wetland-building, carbon-absorbing, climate-regulating super plant!!

Found in wetlands across the Northern Hemisphere, this moss can absorb up to 20 times its weight in water! It slowly releases moisture to create the acidic, low-oxygen conditions that form peat. Peatlands are largely made of sphagnum, and cover just 3% of the Earth’s surface but store about 30% of the world’s soil carbon.

Some species, like red sphagnum moss, turns a beautiful pink or crimson colour due to a pigment called sphagnorubin, which protects them from harsh sunlight. The more pinky-red the moss appears, the more sun and UV exposure receiving.

Before Fjällräven Polar, I had never been dogsledding, snow camped, or even been to the Arctic circle. So it’s safe to say that I was way out of my comfort zone, yet inside the growth zone because of the gear, support, and people.

Fjällräven Polar is a 300 km dogsled expedition through the Scandinavian Arctic, where people from around the world come together to learn how to drive their own sled, care for their dogs, set up winter camp, cook outdoors, and adapt to Arctic conditions. No previous experience is required, which was definitely reassuring for me!

Fjällräven Polar 2027 applications open on September 29, 2026 for the upcoming March 31–April 5, 2027 expedition. Applications are open to people worldwide who are 18+.

Fat bear week is here!! Over the summer and fall, the coastal brown bears of Katmai National Park in Alaska are going through hyperphagia, which is a state of hunger where they eat TONS of salmon to increase their fat stores before winter hibernation.
