Nunavut Fisheries & Marine Training Consortium

We're proud to be partnering with Nunavut Marine Innovation and Research, Qikiqtaaluk Corporation to support the Inuit Employee in Training Program, an initiative that provides paid training and ongoing support to help people from the Qikiqtani Region build rewarding careers in the marine industry.

Through the program, trainees are employed to work aboard QC's vessels during the summer, where they gain valuable hands-on experience alongside experienced crew members. During the fall and winter, they continue developing their skills by completing courses and earning certifications that help advance their marine qualifications.

This session is being instructed by William (Bill) Scott from Georgian College, with assistance from Steve Shaw. We look forward to supporting this group of trainees as they continue building the knowledge, skills, and experience needed for successful careers on the water.

🌊 A First for NFMTC! 🤿

We are thrilled to announce the launch of NFMTC's pilot project—the first-ever PADI Open Water Diver Certification Course!

This exciting training is being led by certified instructor Patrick Allaire, and we are happy to welcome our inaugural participants: Valerie Inukpik, Kevin Sudlovenick, Teena Kakee, and Gianni Canil.

This pilot project represents an exciting milestone for the Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium (NFMTC) as we continue to expand and diversify the training opportunities available to Nunavummiut. By introducing new and innovative programs, we aim to support skills development, create employment opportunities, and help build a stronger marine workforce across the territory.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans' Northern Integrated Commercial Fisheries Initiative (NICFI) for their support of this initiative. Their investment is helping create new opportunities for skills development and marine training in Nunavut.

🎉 Congratulations to Our New Operations Manager! 🎉

The Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium is proud to announce that Eric Idlaut has accepted the position of Operations Manager.

Eric joined NFMTC four years ago as a Project Officer and has consistently gone above and beyond to support our students and ensure they successfully completed their training programs. His dedication, professionalism, and commitment to our organization have made a lasting impact on both our team and the communities we serve.

At NFMTC, we believe in supporting the growth and development of our employees. We are proud to provide opportunities for our staff to advance their careers and succeed within our organization.

This morning was dedicated to general cleanup, organizing, and returning equipment to ensure everything was ready for the next training session. The students also had the opportunity to spend some time on the Fast Rescue Boat simulator, building on their skills and applying their knowledge in a safe training environment.

Some students will begin heading home tomorrow after successfully completing another important step in their marine training journey. Congratulations to everyone for your hard work, commitment, and dedication!

Today was an exciting hands-on training day for our students as part of their STCW training.

Travis Wagner and Andrea Lucano from Georgian College led the students through their firefighting training, beginning the morning with a safety briefing and fit testing to prepare everyone for the day ahead.

The group then moved to the Iqaluit Fire Department’s training grounds, where students gained valuable practical experience and applied the skills they learned in the classroom.

A big thank you to Travis Wagner and Andrea Lucano for sharing their knowledge and expertise, and a special thank you to the Iqaluit Fire Department for supporting this important training opportunity.

This morning, students took part in hands-on training using the survival craft simulator before moving to the pool this afternoon to continue their practical exercises.

These activities are an important part of the STCW course, delivered in coordination with Georgian College, providing students with valuable skills and experience for working safely in the marine industry.

Upgrading from a basic first aid certificate to a Marine Basic First Aid certificate. Travis Wagner from Georgian College came in to deliver the re-certification and support the upgrade process.
