Congratulations Heath.

A lifelong math teacher, Heath Israel understood that his job was not static and made sure he stayed on top of the latest teaching methods. He ensured his classroom was a safe space and was always respectful of his students' individual traits.

His consistent service as a teacher, commitment to the community of Inuvik and legacy that positively affected those who crossed his path are leading him into the NWT Education Hall of Fame. He is inducted into the JK-12 Education category.

Congratulations Denise.

A passionate advocate, Denise McDonald continually promoted culture-based education and wellness support for her students. Many consider her a trailbreaker for culture-based initiatives, and her relationships with elders contributed to creating stronger relationships between the school system and Beaufort Delta communities.

Denise McDonald’s work and achievements have been recognized through several awards, and she will now have another distinction to add to her collection, as she is inducted into the NWT Education Hall of Fame as the Minister’s Choice.

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, BDDEC honours the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and the children who never returned home.

This day calls on all of us to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the painful truths of our shared history. It is also a time to commit ourselves to the ongoing work of reconciliation — to listen, to learn, and to walk together with Indigenous Peoples in the spirit of respect, healing, and understanding.

We wear orange and stand in solidarity as we remember the past and strive to build a future founded on truth, justice, and reconciliation.

We are proud to share that Heath Israel and Denise McDonald have been inducted into the NWT Educator Hall of Fame.

This prestigious recognition highlights their outstanding contributions to education in the Beaufort Delta region. Through their dedication, leadership, and commitment to students and staff, Heath and Denise have made a lasting and meaningful impact in our schools and communities.

This honour is truly well deserved.
