I took Zawadi to the dentist, which was right on Beacon of Hope campus in Kenya, to get her teeth looked at and treated. Check out the before and after photos:

Little Scholars has been sponsoring a young girl, Zawadi, in Kenya for 4 years. She attends a private school called Beacon of Hope Academy in Kenya.

I am here in Kenya working on a few projects to aid her and her mother become more self sufficient. Watch for more about these projects coming soon....

At 6-years-old my first couldn't read. Now, at 8-years-old he is reading chapter books on his own. In addition, he LOVES reading! While some children pick up on reading naturally at a very young age, it is not age appropriate to force 5-year-olds and 6-year-olds to learn to read. There is no evidence that a child is ready to read at such a young age. In fact, the evidence points in the opposite direction. Children who are forced to learn to read before they are developmentally ready not only miss out on speaking and listening skills they should be learning at that time, but they often develop a dislike for reading. So, instead of taking away critical playtime where children acquire essential skills such as language development and social skills, why not wait? Wait until your child is ready to learn to read. In the meantime, let them run, jump, roll, scream, generally run wild, and read to them! This will help to develop the appropriate skills needed to focus enough to be able to read. In addition, it will foster a love of reading that will create lifelong readers! #readingislife #letthekids #homeschooling #playoutside #1000hoursoutside
