Last science class we examined cells up close through microscopes. We took a close look at onion cells and yeast cells and then talked about all that single-celled organisms do for us - namely, fermentation! Homework was to observe the fermentation process of a sourdough focaccia/pizza and then enjoy it!

In preparation for investigations in biology, last week we learned about microscopes. We covered history, a few different types, their parts, and how to operate them. Next week we hope to put our knowledge to the test!

Our last lesson on osmosis and diffusion (both important mechanisms occurring in the cell) led into an introduction to cellular biology. We identified scanning electron microscope images of cells and tissues (not very pretty) and will continue with our own microscopic investigations next time. The complexity at such a small scale is mind-boggling!

Our first week back started with a lesson in chemistry on osmosis and diffusion! We reviewed solutions and their components, covered concentrations, turned on an essential oil diffuser and watched food colouring move through water. Kids were then given an osmosis lab to do at home with gummy bears along with the task of figuring out how osmosis can be dangerous!

Our last lesson on force led naturally into pressure last week. We defined and derived the equation for pressure and learned about Blaise Pascal and his law about the transmission of fluid-pressure and its applications to hydraulics. We finished with a hands-on build of a hydraulic-powered excavator arm.

We celebrated World Toilet Day (November 19th) with a deep dive into the development of toilet technology throughout history. Observing the flushing mechanisms at work, we figured out the names of the components and how they work. We all came away with a new appreciation for these porcelain workhorses!

Last week in science we redesigned our egg drop structures, this time with Newton's Laws of Motion in mind.

This week in science we put social studies together with math and physics concepts. We learned about mechanical energy, the impact of conflict on civilians, delivering humanitarian aid, and then put our design skills to the test to build a prototype of an aid delivery structure (with some eggcellent engineering ideas).

Our first science lesson was a blend of theory and practice, with tasty results! We applied geometry to determine reflected rays in our study of optics. Putting the knowledge to practice, we built solar ovens. Then, like any good scientist, we ate our experimental results.
