How do you feel about the video recently in the US of a non verbal child whose mother put a camera in his hair as she suspected he was being mistreated at school was unbelievable. How many moms here have felt or have found out from their kiddos that they are being bullied at school? How many of those bullies have turned out to be teachers? My sweet boy had this experience. I went in fierce. I was out for blood. The bastard ended up being fired from HRCE but not because of our experience. He was fired for worse, but bullying my son was founded. Just know this is real and happens far too often. Our sweet children struggling with their ADHD go through mistreatment and bullying often. It hurts.

The extent that special needs parents have to do just to make sure their child is safe, even in a place where a child should be safe 😔

I share this heartfelt post because I read a post by this mom who shared a photo of her child laying under a table in a room full of people and everything she talks about is absolutely our experience as moms of children struggling with ADHD. But I think what struck me the most about this post was the picture of the child laying under the table.

It brough back a memory immediately to this time that I realized the gravity of Noah‘s social struggle and the significant impact that his ADHD had on him and his social anxiety. I remember crying, and I remember my pain and fear for him.

He went to his best friend’s 12th birthday party. The party was a sleepover in the yard in a tent and a whole bunch of boys were there to hang out with. Any child’s dream to be with a bunch of kids and having a fun time, only it was never a good experience for Noah.

Noah always had trouble staying anywhere else except home but because it was his best friends house of course he was allowed to stay. Whenever he stayed somewhere else I always made sure that I was available all night because usually I would get a phone call by midnight of Noah crying and wanting to come home.

At the party there was a box out in the yard from one of the birthday gifts. It was a large box and after looking for Noah for a few moments through the window I realized that he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. I overheard a few of the boys laughing and asking what was wrong with him.

I immediately knew that they were referring to Noah and I realized that he was inside the box. I went out to check on him and he was inside the box like a cocoon wrapped around him for safety. He wanted to be there. I think he needed to be wrapped in there. I didn’t understand what was happening to him but it brought me to tears right there in the yard because I saw at that minute that socially he couldn’t cope with trying to fit in. He couldn’t cope with trying to be a part of the group; trying to not show his anxiety and his ADHD symptoms that others saw as strange and weird and I could hear the comments. And so could he.

I realized at that moment how badly he was struggling, and I remember being asked by another adult “What is he doing? Why is he doing that?“ Again, completely being judged.

I realized at that moment that he and I were the only two people that understood each other and no one else there could make sense of his struggles or what was happening to him. No one else there could support him, and no one else there cared if he was okay.

I finally was able to convince him to come out of the box. That he was safe. He did stay the night. I don’t know what he went through during the night. I stayed a long time to make sure he would be okay before going home. I spent the night tossing and turning with anxiety all night hoping he was accepted and okay.

This was the last time he was invited to a birthday. The long friendship dissipated and that is when I began to recognize the intense struggles of Noah’s young teenage years of being accepted and understood. He experinced bullying every year of his school life.

It would be years before he would have a friend call him again. It would be years before he was invited again. It would be years before he felt like he belonged again. And the pain that we went through as a family to see our child endure these struggles was so overwhelming. It was heart wrenching.

I share this with everyone today because I know there are many moms out there that are watching their children go through the same struggles daily. And I want you to know that IT WILL GET BETTER if you put in place the right support, the right interventions, and the right parenting skills to help your child cope through their challenges.

Know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE and I love you all.

I am here to help you. I have leaened and developed many skils and techniques to help you help your child.

XOXO Angela

Anyone out there dealing with Learning Disabilities or LDs as I call them? Check this out:

This is dysgraphia. Dysgraphia is a condition that can accompany ADHD where the affected person cannot process written language well. They have difficulty forming letters, sounds, spelling words, and just getting thoughts down on paper fast enough. Do you see how he forms his letters from the bottom up? The wrist motions of forming the letters are exaggerated and not smooth. It's taken 15 years to produce this type of writing, and still this is Noah's LEAST favorite thing to do - WRITE. So, I scribe for him, and make him attempt one of the written questions. This is what we do EVERY day.

Scribing is one of the adaptations for Noah's learning plans.

This is dysgraphia. By 15 year old Noah.

Sad but true! This is why I created Focus Pocus Academy. There wasn’t anyone who understood what we were going through and there was no where to turn for support. So I created support!
