Two more extended stop arms have been added to our school bus fleet as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce vehicle fly-bys - motorists passing a school bus while its red lights are flashing.
The use of extended stop arms has greatly reduced the number of fly-by incidents experienced by buses equipped with them. With these latest additions, HPSD now has eight school buses equipped with extended stop arms.
Approved by the Board at the June Board Meeting, the two new extended stop arms have been installed on the buses experiencing the highest number of fly-by incidents:

Driven by Nora Eben on a Slave Lake route
With school buses returning to the road on Monday, August 31, and school zones once again in effect, we remind motorists to use extra caution and remember:

With school buses back on the road beginning ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐๐ฒ, ๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐, motorists are reminded to use extra caution and know the rules when approaching a school bus.
At the August 18 Board Meeting, Director of Transportation Sheldon Bossert provided an update on school bus safety, including incidents of While the installation of extended stop arms on buses travelling routes with a high number of fly-bys has helped significantly reduce these incidents, vehicles are still passing buses stopped with their red lights flashing
Passing a school bus with its red lights flashing is not only illegal โ it puts students at serious risk. Drivers who fail to stop can also receive a $567 fine and 6 demerit points.
As school buses return to the road, motorists are reminded:
Flashing amber lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be prepared to stop.
Flashing red lights mean STOP. Drivers approaching from either direction must stop, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a highway physically divided by a median.
Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing.
Please watch carefully for school buses and students as we head back to school. Be ready to stop and help keep our students safe.
