Two more extended stop arms have been added to our school bus fleet as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce vehicle fly-bys - motorists passing a school bus while its red lights are flashing.

The use of extended stop arms has greatly reduced the number of fly-by incidents experienced by buses equipped with them. With these latest additions, HPSD now has eight school buses equipped with extended stop arms.

Approved by the Board at the June Board Meeting, the two new extended stop arms have been installed on the buses experiencing the highest number of fly-by incidents:

We are pleased to announce a new leadership appointment for the upcoming school year. ๐€๐ฆ๐š๐ง๐๐š ๐๐ซ๐š๐๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ ๐ก๐š๐ฌ ๐›๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐š๐ฉ๐ฉ๐จ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐•๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐œ๐ข๐ฉ๐š๐ฅ of Roland Michener Secondary School

Amanda began her career at Roland Michener in 2006 and has spent the past 20 years supporting students and contributing to the school community. Throughout her time in the classroom, she has taught a wide range of junior and senior high science courses, including Chemistry and CALM.

Since 2023, Amanda has served as a Learning Support Teacher, collaborating with students, staff, and families to address diverse learning needs and promote student success. In this role, she has supported the development and monitoring of Individual Student Plans, provided individual and small-group support, overseen divisional assessments, and worked as part of the schoolโ€™s Student Support Team. She has also contributed to the development of High Prairie School Divisionโ€™s Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks.

Amanda has taken on a number of leadership roles throughout her career. She has facilitated Collaborative Team Meetings, led numeracy initiatives, and mentored new teachers. Her experience also extends beyond the school and Division. Amanda was invited by Alberta Education to participate in a provincial science curriculum working group and to contribute to the writing of Chemistry 30 diploma exam questions.

Amanda has been actively involved in the Roland Michener school community throughout her career. She has coached junior and senior high basketball and senior girls volleyball, served as a graduation coordinator, and supported numerous school and student activities. These experiences have allowed her to build strong relationships with students, colleagues, families, and the broader community.

Amanda holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Science with an Advanced Major in Chemistry from Dalhousie University.

High Prairie School Division congratulates Amanda on her appointment and wishes her every success in her new role as Vice Principal of Roland Michener Secondary School.

With school buses back on the road beginning ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ, ๐€๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ, motorists are reminded to use extra caution and know the rules when approaching a school bus.

At the August 18 Board Meeting, Director of Transportation Sheldon Bossert provided an update on school bus safety, including incidents of While the installation of extended stop arms on buses travelling routes with a high number of fly-bys has helped significantly reduce these incidents, vehicles are still passing buses stopped with their red lights flashing

Passing a school bus with its red lights flashing is not only illegal โ€” it puts students at serious risk. Drivers who fail to stop can also receive a $567 fine and 6 demerit points.

As school buses return to the road, motorists are reminded:

๐ŸŸก Flashing amber lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and be prepared to stop.

๐Ÿ”ด Flashing red lights mean STOP. Drivers approaching from either direction must stop, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a highway physically divided by a median.

๐Ÿ›‘ Remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing.

Please watch carefully for school buses and students as we head back to school. Be ready to stop and help keep our students safe.

Pam will be assuming the role while the Board of Trustees enters into the search for a new Superintendent of Schools/CEO, as current Superintendent and CEO Murray Marran is moving to his new role as Superintendent at Northland School Division.

In addition to over two decades of experience in the classroom and as a school administrator, Pam has also served as Assistant Superintendent and then as Deputy Superintendent for a combined total of four years in senior leadership with the Division. During this time, she has overseen a number of key departments, including Facilities, Safety, Wellness and Mental Health, Learning Support Teachers, and Inclusive Education. She holds a Bachelor of Education with Distinction from the University of Alberta, with a major in Instrumental Music and a minor in English Language Arts. She also holds a Master of Education in Educational Studies from the University of Alberta.

Chair Joy McGregor stated that โ€œAs a Board, we are very fortunate to have someone with knowledge of our Division, both at the school level and the district office level, to maintain operations while we proceed with the process of selecting a new superintendent. We wish Murray all the best in his new role and look forward to announcing our new superintendent of schools in the coming months.โ€

Deputy Superintendent Pam Heckbert continued with, โ€œI look forward to continuing to work with the Board. I will be focused on providing continuity of services in the Division; providing supports to schools as they start the new school year so Division operations continue during this time.โ€

Superintendent and CEO Murray Marran closed by saying, โ€œDeputy Superintendent Heckbert has been integral to operations at our central office. Her experience in our executive team has provided her with knowledge and supervision of many departments, liaising with all departments and schools, to allow for an uninterrupted transition while the Board of Trustees seeks a successful candidate for the role.โ€

On behalf of High Prairie School Division, congratulations to Pam Heckbert on your appointment as Acting Superintendent and for your continued support of the Division, its students and families, and our staff.
