The Grade 3–5 students had an amazing field trip to Moose Jaw today! They spent the day exploring and learning! Students completed a scavenger hunt at the Western Development Museum, participated in an ice cream-making session, enjoyed lunch at the park, and wrapped up the day with tour of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw! 🎉

The Hazlet School food studies class was privileged to have guest presenter Sherry Unger in today to do a pie making session. Anyone who’s had Sherry’s pie knows this is a special treat that has every Mennonite Momma’s stamp of approval. 😁
The students made 2 cherry, 1 blueberry, 3 pumpkin, 2 apple, and 1 strawberry Rubarb, which were excitedly received by the staff and students.
Over half of our pies were made from locally grown fruits and the students knocked it out of the park!

Following last week’s pasta making tutorial with Chef Garrett Theines from Harvest Eatery, Hazlet School Food Studies students were inspired to create a full Italian meal as a class project. They made homemade fettuccine (with the Semolina flour provided by SWT) with a creamy Parmesan sauce and sautéed shrimp, along with an Olive Garden inspired Zuppa Toscana soup and roasted asparagus.

This group of students is enthusiastic to cook, create, and experiment in the kitchen. The Food Studies students have had a rich hands-on learning experience this year, often bringing those skills and recipes home to prepare for their families. The great support from the community, the school garden, and local initiatives has made these experiences possible!! 👩‍🍳👨‍🍳

Thank you to Chef Garrett Theines from Harvest Eatery for sharing his love of cooking and the art of making pasta! Students learned how to make pasta dough, different types of pasta and how to make a simple and healthy pasta recipe!

SWT generously shared bags of their NEW Semolina Flour - made from Durum harvested right here in the Southwest - which is ideal for making homemade and delicious pasta!

This programming is supported by funding from the Community Initiatives fund and organized with support from Hazlet Economic Development committee.
