Little glimpses.

The little glimpses of these two in a peaceful state of concentration with purposeful work.

These are the moments that have been being built on through repetition and a ton of patience (that comes from the Lord, because my own patience is not enough!)

In a world where everything is instant and at our fingertips, the slow moments that turn into the most beautiful result seems even more important

They are also well worth the effort.

These moments lasted 15 minutes.

15 minutes.

That may seem insignificant to some.

But to those of us that are building something more than performance based learning, more than checklist education- these 15 minutes are everything.

We are building a love of learning.
We are building stewards of the world.
We are pausing to work through big emotions in a way that honours each unique child.
We are creating emotionally intelligent humans that will one day serve others.
We are honoring children for who they are and not what a system says they should be.

This takes time. Care. Intention. Patience.

These 15 minutes where two little humans are working peacefully side by side with hands on learning materials that they chose independently and are in peaceful focus, well that is worth everything.

I known this sounds strange coming from a Montessori Guide because we start literacy “early” but I’m not talking about Montessori education…hear me out:

We are in a literacy crisis.
The stats from the public system are extremely concerning and something needs to change BUT it does not mean we need to push literacy earlier and harder in kindergarten.

Right now, the response is focused on more:
👉more reading,
👉more writing,
👉more expectations —
at younger ages.

But the real issue isn’t WHEN literacy starts — it’s HOW it’s being taught.

When we skip:
• Fine motor development before pencils
• Repetition, mastery, and meaningful practice
• Following a child’s individual pace
• Respecting different learning styles
• Honouring child development as a whole

…we don’t create confident readers.
We create frustrated learners.

Children don’t need more pressure.
They need strong foundations.

If we truly want to support literacy long-term, we need to slow down, respect development, and trust the process — not rush children through it.

Foundations matter. Always have.

Ok let’s talk about this 🙊

I’ve been reading the new updates that the public school system is implementing and it’s just not sitting right and it’s because the powers that may be just don’t get child development.

Full stop. ✋

And the thing is, when we don’t understand child development, we start responding to outcomes instead of causes.

And it’s just a really slippery slope from there. Which is why statistics show us incredibly low literacy rates in our province.

We see struggling readers and writers — and push academics earlier.

We add pressure instead of asking WHY.

But children aren’t problems to fix.

They’re developing humans who need to be UNDERSTOOD.

When parents (and educators) understand child development:
• Expectations become more realistic
• Support becomes more effective
• Children feel respected, not rushed

And when children feel understood, they feel safe.

When they feel safe, they can learn.

This is something Montessori does well — not because it’s superior, but because it is deeply rooted in observing children, respecting their pace, and building strong foundations before demanding outcomes.

Understanding your child more leads to:
✔ More patience
✔ More connection
✔ Better advocacy
✔ Less self-doubt

And truly this isn’t a post to tear down the public system but it is a post to create awareness and advocacy for your child.

If you find yourself wanting to know more and support your child better- understanding child development is where it’s at and you can start small:

• Read books on child development and learning
• Listen to podcasts from child development experts
• Attend parent workshops or info sessions
• Ask why before asking your child to perform
• Seek out educators and accounts that explain the why behind learning

Following your instincts matters.
So does giving yourself the knowledge to trust them.

Group coaching. The best.

Met with homeschooling moms on the weekend and we discussed what’s going well, what’s frustrating, what we don’t know, what we want to know and everything in between.

Homeschooling is not for the faint of heart and can easily feel isolating and overwhelming at times.

Getting together with other families that have chosen this journey and bouncing ideas off of, sharing stories with and learning from is truly a gift that you need!

So grateful to offer guidance to some beautiful mamas and support them in any way I can through this educational journey.
