This particular spot on our route in and out of town can be very tricky and dangerous. If we are coming into Harwood from the stable, there is a ten foot bank on the right. The dogs appearance in the yard is sporadic, and we never know when they will appear. Their position above the horse also makes it harder for them to accept. As well, if we are going back to the stable, this is a blind corner. If the dogs come at the horses when a car is either passing or meeting us, and the horses veer to the left there is no room for error. On this run, Canadian mare Miss Kay was on only her third run to town. She handled the noise and commotion very well, and we were very pleased with her. Each time she sees them now, it will be much easier and she will pay less attention to them. Have a great weekend everyone. (๐ŸŽฅ Kevin White)

In our years of training, we have seen many different scenarios played out while on the road. This particular one was right up there with the most unusual ones that we have seen. There was a large truck backed into the first field about two hundred yards from the road and I had heard a loud machine running down in the corn fields across from the stable and assumed that they were doing some form of spraying or fertilizing on the crop.

We were just heading out with Friesian cross Standardbred mare Flicka for only her third day on the road. Up to this point she had only met a couple of cars. As we were coming up to where the truck was backed in, we soon found out what was making all of the noise. We had just come up to where the truck was backed in and all of a sudden a large crop drone came over the trees and landed on the truck. I told Kevin to hang on, in case Flicka had a bad reaction to it. We were very pleased when she very calmly carried right on. We had decided that we would take Corkery Road to Hillview and then come back. We had just turned back on Corkery after reaching Hillview (this section is narrow and has a couple of hills on it) and all of a sudden over the first hill came a big truck, and he was moving right along. I told Kevin to hang on, as Flicks had not met anything like this. As it got closer, we realized it was the truck that had the drone on it. In no time at all it was right up to us and much to our surprise and delight, Flicka paid little attention to it. We then carried on quietly back to the stable, a very successful and satisfying drive. We both agreed that this was definitely one of the most unique experiences that we have had.

Have a great weekend everyone. Hopefully it will be a nice one!

Loud unexpected noises can be a real and dangerous problem when driving on the road. Gun fire and back firing cars are just two of the many noises that we have encountered on different occasions. In order to help prepare the horses for this, we expose them to loud noises as shown in this video. On the left is Percheron cross Canadian mare Ruby with her owner Kevin White. On the right is Friesian cross Morgan mare Maggie with her owner Brian Arnold. Both horses handled this session very nicely and will definitely benefit from this training in their years ahead. Have a great long weekend everyone, and stay safe. (๐ŸŽฅ Julie Green)

This lovely mare is Friesian cross Standardbred Flicka. She is owned by Lindsay Leckie of Kingston and is coming along nicely with her training. She was on the road today for her first time. We are looking forward to our days ahead with her. Have a nice weekend everyone, and enjoy this lovely weather. (๐ŸŽฅ Kevin White)

Three year old Canadian mare Miss Kay got the surprise of her life on yesterday's run. She'd not had an encounter with any type of vehicle as it was only her third day on the road. We were on our way back to the stable and had just turned around at the corner of Corkery and White Road. We heard a loud vehicle coming and up the road came this cement truck. I said to Kevin that he would probably turn right and go to the new build at the end of the road. Kevin said no; he had his signal on and was coming our way. In no time he had caught us and I quickly picked the safest place to let him pass, which was a shallow ditch. I told Kevin to hang on and did my best to keep her as quiet and as steady as possible. The truck was soon by us and thankfully Kay handled it very well. We carried on towards home and about 500 yards from the stable he came right back at us! This time however, there was a wider spot to stop and Kevin quietly took her head and she stood nicely. I am sure that in the next few weeks, there will be many other challenges ahead. She certainly handled her first big one very well. Have a great weekend everyone, it looks as though the smoke is clearing. (๐ŸŽฅ Kevin White)

On a recent posting we did, the video showed Canadian mare Miss Kay off to a bit of a rough start. However, this video here was taken three days later and as you can see, she is much more settled. It is only natural for them to sometimes react as she did the first time or two they are put on a vehicle. However, they quite often get more bold and confident each time that they are driven. Hopefully Miss Kay has clear sailing ahead. Have a nice weekend everyone, and stay cool. (๐ŸŽฅ Kevin White)
