Our favorite season is upon us - puddle jumping season! The snow melt and rain has given us so many opportunities to jump and splash, bringing JOY to the children.

Turns out I take a lot of photos with the intention of posting and then forget to actually post.
Here are a few more from the fall. My retaining wall needed to be replaced, so of course we had to watch and make sure they did a great job!

These ones are from way back in the fall! I had the best helper trying a new recipe - pumpkin spice loaf. Having fun in the kitchen brings about so much learning. Science transforms ingredients into something new. Math to measure. Strength and coordination to scoop and stir. And best of all - the senses. Smelling different spices and tasting a new food.

B brought in his harmonica! We enjoyed listening to him play it, and learned that they soldiers used to play them because they are so small and portable.

Stepping stones may look like they have one play possibility, but these two disagree. They realized the stepping stones are great for hiding behind while playing peek a boo!

It's been a LONG time since I had the wooden blocks out. This little one worked hard to make her creation. When some of it fell over, she said, "that's ok," and kept on building.
If I had an adult driven agenda, I might point out that two small blocks are the same size as 1 bigger block. Or I might ask her to count how many blocks high her creation is, or anything else I might deem as important learning. Instead, in my child led program, I let things unfold organically, stepping in when I am invited, watching for what they discover.

Peek a boo! Learning all about object permanence while having FUN in the tent.

A BEAUTIFUL day to play! After a long winter, and so, so many rainy days, it is nice to see the sun again. These three are soaking it up.
The little one in the sand is enjoying while working on his hand eye coordination and visual tracking skills as he dumps sand from one object to another. His brain is also making all kinds of connections as he explores the feel of it on his hands, the breeze on his face, and the sights and sounds of the backyard.

The big two are having so much FUN running around and strengthening their muscles as they climb and slide. They are also busy learning about nature - one thought he saw something super scary, but upon closer inspection, we realized it was simply a seed from a birch tree.

"We're the rulers of the castle!"

These two little ones are NOT the ones I mentioned in the campfire post. The one in the green hat though, was watching the others closely. Today she found her own stick, put it in the ground, and announced she had roasted a marshmallow. She continued to roast several more before finding another activity.
Children can often be found imitating those around them, it is how they learn! This can continue our whole lives - someone telling or showing us how to do something, either in person or via the internet. So the next time you see a child standing back and observing, look around, be patient, and maybe you will find the learning.
