German classes for children in Halifax – Registration is open 🗓️

Our small German school in Halifax offers once-a-week afternoon classes in a warm and welcoming environment.

Classes are suitable for young children with or without German-speaking background and families interested in German language and culture.

Children learn German in small groups through games, songs, stories, language activities, and cultural experiences.

Allow us to introduce Barbara.

My name is Barbara Kluge, and this school year will be my fifth year teaching with the GHLS. I was born in Davos, Switzerland, and moved to Canada at a young age. I received my BSc (Double Major in Biology and Neuroscience, Minor in English at Dalhousie University), and my Bachelor of Education from MSVU, taught a few terms after that, then took a break to be home with my three young daughters (who are currently also taking classes at the GHLS), and started substitute teaching through the public school system again a few years ago. Many years ago, I taught the Preschool GHLS class, but over the last four years, I have been teaching the Children 2 and Children 3 classes. I am passionate about furthering students‘ love for and skills of the German language, and try to balance their learning experience of academic/structured work with hands-on learning (ie arts/crafts, music, science experiments, yoga, etc). First and foremost, I hope that children look forward to their German class each week, and that they continue to progress in their German learning each year.

Looking forward to the 2026-2027 school year! 😀

Preparation for Deutsches Sprachdiplom (DSD 1).
Dialogues in pairs and small groups; language experience approach; quiz; role-play; sentence frames; games; expressing their preferences; talking and writing about everyday topics and situations; writing letters and emails; talking about time/transportation/hobbies/profession/family/food/holidays/seasons/weather/friends. Reading simple newspaper and magazine texts; writing about their own opinion and experiences; reading books, watching German films; projects; videotaping interviews; debating, discussing current events and topics, such as school/bullying/fashion/current events; learning how to write a summary.

Lisa unterrichtet Adult Klasse 2 and DSD 1.

Hallo, mein Name ist Lisa, ich komme ursprünglich aus Düsseldorf und unterrichte die Children 5/ DSD Klasse sowie die Adult 2 Klasse. Des Weiteren bin ich vice principal der GHLS.
Ich unterrichte seit 2017 an der Schule und finde es immer toll, neue Menschen kennenzulernen und den Spaß an der deutschen Sprache weiterzugeben. Egal welches Alter oder Hintergrund; alle können dem Unterricht etwas tolles beifügen und Neues lernen.
Meine Freizeit verbringe ich im Hundesport und viel mit meiner Tochter in der Natur.

Hello, my name is Lisa, I’m originally from Düsseldorf, Germany and teach the Children 5/DSD class as well as the adult 2 class.
I am also the vice principal of the GHLS.
I’ve been teaching at the school since 2017 and enjoy meeting new people and passing on the fun of learning the german language. No matter the age or background; everyone can contribute something great to class and learn new things.
In my free time I participate in dog sports and spend lots of time in nature with my daughter.

Allow us to introduce the German Conversation Plus class. 💬

German Conversation Plus is an all ages class to improve your German after completing our Adult 3 or DSD 1 levels. We talk about everything related to life in Germany - Eurovision sond contest, wolves, art, fairy tales - in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Also, we do class trips, enjoy games and learn from each other, for example by student presentations. Next year, our grammar focus will be on tenses, and students will work on increasing their vocabulary. We will also practice our debating skills, and hopefully send a team of younger learners to „Jugend Debattiert International“.

German Conversation Plus ist ein Kurs für alle Altersgruppen, der sich an Lernende richtet, die bereits unser Niveau Adult 3 oder DSD 1 abgeschlossen haben und ihre Deutschkenntnisse weiter verbessern möchten.
In einer freundlichen und unterstützenden Atmosphäre sprechen wir über alles, was mit dem Leben in Deutschland zu tun hat – vom Eurovision Song Contest über Wölfe und Kunst bis hin zu Märchen. Außerdem unternehmen wir gemeinsame Ausflüge, spielen Spiele und lernen voneinander, zum Beispiel durch Präsentationen der Teilnehmenden.
