Kwe,
The 2024-2025 academic year has been a pivotal time for Keknu’tmasiek Ta’n Tel Welo’ltimk (KW) at Dalhousie Medical School. Since our formation in 2016, we have focused on Indigenous-led solutions for recruitment, retention, teaching, education, professional development, and research benefiting Indigenous learners.
We are happy to share our annual report, highlighting our commitment to improving Indigenous health and breaking down barriers to medical education for Indigenous students. We continue to promote anti-racism and cultural safety in healthcare systems across the Maritimes and Canada.
This year, we welcomed 11 new Indigenous students through our Indigenous Admissions Pathway, increasing our total to 32 undergraduate MD students. Our postgraduate programs are also making strides, with more Indigenous trainees joining us. Notably, we hosted the Annual General Meeting and Mentorship Gathering of the Indigenous Physicians Association of Canada for the first time, emphasizing our key role in Indigenous medical education.
Additionally, we partnered with the Promoting Leadership in Health for African Nova Scotians program and the Inclusive Pathways to Medical Professions initiative, securing $600,000 in funding over three years from the RBC Foundation. This funding will strengthen our recruitment efforts and support for Indigenous and Black learners.
We want to thank our dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners. Your support has been vital to our success. Together, we are creating meaningful opportunities in Indigenous health.
Thank you for being a part of our community. I look forward to making further progress together.
Wela’lioq,
KW Team
