Alan Sylliboy Culture As Medicine

In partnership with the Dalhousie Art Gallery and Nimbus Publishing, the Faculty of Medicine is pleased to invite you to Culture as Medicine, a special event celebrating the unveiling of a new public art installation by Mi’kmaw artist Alan Syliboy (https://link.webtrackz.com/hPeS?recipient_id=14hUqSVYKaj2gO0T9RrdVKbkjTo0THYY8iTkz-EmsMJfigAywE4_v2tA) in the foyer of the Sir Charles Tupper Medical Building, alongside the launch of The Journey So Far, the major new publication accompanying his 2024 retrospective at the Dalhousie Art Gallery.
 
Alan Syliboy’s work draws on ancient Mi’kmaq petroglyphs to create a powerful contemporary visual language rooted in identity, place, and ancestral knowledge. Born and raised in Millbrook, Nova Scotia, he continues to live and work in the province, using art to honour cultural memory and foster connection across generations.
 
The Faculty of Medicine is focused on creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where people feel safe, respected, and seen. Bringing Alan Syliboy’s work into the Tupper Foyer is one meaningful way to recognize the diverse communities our faculty has a responsibility to serve, while re‑imagining a shared campus space to better reflect who we are today.
 
This installation represents a starting point. As we move forward, we hope to continue building this collection and using shared spaces to showcase the work, stories, and perspectives of the communities we are committed to serving, creating opportunities for ongoing learning and reflection.
 
We look forward to unveiling the newly installed works on June 10. A limited number of copies of The Journey So Far, which includes an introduction by Dalhousie’s former director of Indigenous community engagement, Catherine Martin, will also be available on site.
