Ardmore School, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Chris Wootton has very kindly shared these photos of the 1952-1953 Grade 2 report card of his mother, the former Maureen Donnelly, who attended Ardmore School. The teacher was P Mielke.

Chris wrote as follows: 'My mother passed away a year ago and while going through her papers (she's was from Halifax) and I came across a report card from this school. You are welcome to add it to your collection of pictures and post online if you'd like.'

Those who attended Ardmore School will remember MacKay’s Pharmacy on the corner of Oxford and Liverpool Streets. Entering the store was always a pleasant experience because it was so neat and well kept. There was an extensive magazine section to the right, and at the back was a sub-post office (Sub Office No. 10) that seemed to be always busy.

The Halifax Sub No. 10 Post Office opened 21 March 1943 and temporarily closed 9 March 1949. It reopened 1 September 1949 and closed permanently 9 March 1992.

The names of the postmasters of Halifax Sub Office No. 10 appear in the list below. From 19 Jun 1950 until 27 Apr 1951, the postmaster at No 10 was Donald A Mahon (1911-1989), who was then operating a stationery store from 438 Oxford Street. Mahon went on to establish a chain of quality stationery stores known as Mahon’s Stationery. The location of the stores varied over time, but the Spring Garden Road and Halifax Shopping Centre location were among the best.

The photo on right of Mahon’s Stationery on Spring Garden Road was taken in 1963. The photo in the middle shows 2959 Oxford Street in 1985 when MacKay’s Pharmacy and the sub post office were still in operation. The photo on the right was taken in 2016 when a café operated from the address.

According REALATOR.ca, 2959 Oxford Street sold for $1,320,000 on 27 June 2023 after being originally listed for $1,525,000.
