Halifax Independent School, founded in 1974, offers a dynamic education for students aged 4 to 15, from pre-primary to grade nine, with a close-knit community of around 200 students. We are a private day school for students in pre-school through grade 9. For 40 years we have been learning and loving it – achieving academic excellence at every level of education in a co-operative and respectful environment. In addition to the warmth and depth of our programme in class, children broaden their horizons with specialist instruction in French, Music and Swimming. We dedicate ourselves to offering children a joyful and meaningful educational experience. September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The NDTR aims to fulfill the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call-to-Action #80 and serves as a day of remembrance, reflection, action and learning.

Since 2013, September 30 has been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day to recognize the tragic history and long-standing effects of residential schools. The NDTR, created in 2021, provides an opportunity for Canadians to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools, allowing for a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.

Halifax Independent School is committed to learning, reflecting, and taking meaningful steps toward decolonization and reconciliation - with our students and in our community. We aim to incorporate indigenous perspectives in our theme lessons, activities, libraries, and conversations throughout the year, but they are especially present in our classrooms during this time.

We have shared with our families some resources for learners of all ages - suggestions for activities to do on September 30th (NDTR/Orange Shirt Day), October 1st (Treaty Day), and through the month of October (Mi’kmaq History Month); jumping off points for conversations at home; and information for all of us to help in the learning and unlearning around these topics, on this day and beyond.

This past April, our Middle School Bands performed in the Atlantic Festivals of Music at MSVU. They each received a tiered ranking (two silver places) in their respective categories, and enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a workshop with an adjudicator. Congratulations to our students for rising to the challenge of participating in this performance experience, and a big thank you to Adam for directing our H.I.S. Bands!

We love to invite guest speakers/facilitators into our classes, to enrich our studies and investigations. Often drawn from our parent body or extended community, there is a wealth of knowledge and experiences to be shared from these subject experts and enthusiasts.

Last fall, Lynn Dafoe, with the Geological Survey of Canada, supported our MS7 and 8 classes with their studies of rock and mineral identification in their Earth Science unit. Thank you to Lynn, and to all of our many guest speakers, for sharing your expertise and helping to enhance our students’ explorations and learning!

As we approach the start of the new school year, we’re looking back on some of the events and activities from the past year that we didn’t get a chance to share with you here.

While the grade 9s were off on their end of year class trip in June, the grade 7s and 8s took to the water at St. Mary’s Boat Club, learning how to canoe and fish just in time for summer break. What a great way to end the school year!
Now we’re looking forward to hearing about any summertime canoeing or fishing adventures, when we are back together again next month!

Our school is still buzzing with activity - from our Littles and Funshine campers, to our playground renovation project in full swing. Our Elementary & Middle School teachers have wrapped up for their break, and we can probably guess what some of them will be up to this summer! 🌞📚
