University Affairs has published the latest pair of articles in their summer debate series, which focus this time on the topic of institutional neutrality. This has been a hotly debated topic over the last few years, with articles shared through multiple publications. Normally, the arguments are anchored heavily in a 1967 policy document from the University of Chicago known as the Kalven Report, a foundational document on the topic that argued in favour of neutrality. In this latest pair of articles, however, the authors have opted to instead focus on the purpose and abilities of the Canadian university today and whether neutrality serves this purpose.

Eleven research projects at UNB have been awarded more than $1.75 million in research grants by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The grants, awarded under the Insight Grant and Insight Development Grant programs, were announced by the Government of Canada on July 21, 2026.

The projects tackle some of the complex and challenging issues facing our communities today, including sexual violence, energy transitions, children’s rights, education, language learning, legal and financial frameworks, and how we adapt to changing work environments, as well as better understanding the histories of our region.
